1975 Moto Guzzi 850-T3

In June of 2023, my mechanic and good friend shared a list of motorcycles he was selling for the widow of a long-time client. She knew nothing about bikes, but trusted Carlo to sell them; I was being offered first pick.

The prior owner had good taste; among the classic BMWs and Hondas, there were four Guzzis: a 1000SP, a LeMans1, a Griso and a ‘76 850-T3 (built in April 1975, so it’s a ‘75 to me) that caught my eye.

I already had a birth-year bike; a ‘75 Goldwing, the first year for both the GL1000 and me. I loved my naked ‘wing, but age, mileage and complexity made it unreliable, and I had already vowed to sell it.

The deal for the T3 was completed before I saw the bike in person. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a runner that only needed a fresh set of tires and an oil change.

I rode it often, not out of necessity, but out of want. It was glorious. The characteristic Guzzi vibration and exhaust note, the intake noise, the flickability of the Tonti frame, and brakes that performed surprisingly well for their age. The looks were spectacular from both roadside and atop its seat. The hypnotic needles of the Veglia Borletti instruments danced as they crept up the MPH and RPM scales.

After spending some time in the shop to address my list of non-critical items, the T3 has remained perfect, just a few tweaks needed to address 51 year old bike things.

It’s been my trusted and nimble bike for commuting, Sunday coffee runs, touring, and has even hit the track and outperformed my wildest expectations while surprising guys on sport bikes.

It’s timeless and approachable; my wife, who loves my hobby but generally detests my bikes, actually likes the T3. She’s named it “put-put” for its idle sound. We never ride that far; we don’t have to. The T3 embodies the Italian virtue of slow living. Enjoy every moment; don’t rush. Warm it up before riding off; don’t force gear changes; shut the fuel taps after the ride. The bike rewards ritual at the altar of Guzzi.

It’s not a forever bike like my Griso, but I enjoy every moment with it. One day, when the next owner is found, I’ll be sad to see it go. by @guzziworld
