A period is more than just a date on the calendar. Understanding it is part of understanding your body.

As part of our Menstrual Hygiene Outreach, we spent time with young girls, teaching them about menstrual cycle tracking and how to use a manual period tracking bead to monitor their cycles.

Menstrual tracking involves keeping a record of your period dates, cycle length and patterns over time. It helps girls understand their bodies, anticipate their next period and recognise changes in their cycles.

With the manual tracking bead, the girls learnt a simple, hands-on way to follow their menstrual cycles and build a habit of paying attention to their menstrual health.

Because every girl deserves the knowledge to understand her body, ask questions without shame and make informed decisions about her health.

What advice would you give to a girl child?

We asked secondary school girls to share their advice to the girl child, and their answers are a reminder that sometimes, the words we need to hear most are the ones we can offer one another.

To every girl growing up, discovering herself, finding her voice and learning what she is capable of: your dreams matter. Your voice matters. You deserve the opportunity to learn, to lead, to make mistakes and to become all that you aspire to be.

This International Day of the Girl Child, may we create a world where every girl is heard, supported and given the freedom to dream beyond the limits others may place on her.

Her voice matters. Her dreams matter. Her future matters.

Today’s Spotlight: Rachel Ojuromi

Rachel Ojuromi started out as a young creative making fashion videos on the streets of Lagos, turning everyday spaces into her own runway.

Her creativity caught wider attention when she recreated Chanel’s Métiers d’Art 2026 collection in Lagos, using pieces from her own wardrobe and working with her creative team to reinterpret the looks in her own environment. The recreation eventually caught the attention of Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy.

On October 5, Rachel walked Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2027 runway at the Grand Palais in Paris.

From creating fashion content in Lagos to stepping onto the Chanel runway, her journey is a reminder that you do not have to wait until you have a big platform, the perfect resources or the approval of others before you begin.

Start with what you have. Take your work seriously. Keep creating and keep showing up.

When we tell girls to dream.

But do we really let them?

Sit properly.
Don’t talk too much.
Be nice.
Don’t be too loud.
That’s not really for girls.
Maybe choose something more “suitable.”

She learns early that some dreams get a nod, while others get a warning.

So when she grows up and starts questioning the limits, we call her difficult.

Are we giving girls room to discover who they are, or quietly teaching them who they’re allowed to become? by @gwdfoundationn

We spend so much time telling girls how to sit, how to speak, and how to succeed.
Rarely do we stop to build the actual ground they stand on.
A young girl navigating her world doesn't need another manual, She needs a foundation.
She needs the security to stumble without shame, the freedom to question what she’s handed, and adults who know how to listen.

You cannot preach leadership to a girl while keeping her boxed in.

International Day to Protect Education from Attack

Every girl deserves to learn without fear.

School should be a place where she feels safe to ask questions, make mistakes, discover herself and dream about the woman she wants to become.
