TERMINAL | PART TWO

Art isn’t complete when the painting leaves the studio.
It comes alive when people stand in front of it.

TERMINAL was a very special exhibition for me, not only because of the paintings, but because of the people who came to see them, talk about them and spend time with them.

After months of working in a warehouse, it was wonderful to see the paintings finally filling the gallery and to watch people looking, talking, questioning and reacting to the work.

I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who came, supported the exhibition and helped make it happen, and especially to the gallery team, who gave the work such a wonderful space to be seen.

For me, that’s what contemporary art is about.

Not just the painting on the wall, but the conversation and connection that happens around it.
Thank you for being part of TERMINAL. ❤️

TERMINAL | AN EXHIBITION BY GYM HALAMA

Welcome to TERMINAL, an exhibition bringing together the work of contemporary artist Gym Halama.

Gym’s paintings move between the intimate and the monumental. With paintings measuring 4 metres × 2.5 metres, she enjoys changing scale, subject and materials and, most importantly, challenging herself.

Her work doesn’t fit neatly into one category. Figurative, abstract and conceptual painting all have a place in her studio, often developing through experimentation, layers, texture and instinct.

Gym’s paintings are about life, people, emotion, memory and the unexpected. Sometimes a painting begins with an idea. Sometimes it begins with a feeling. And sometimes she simply starts painting and discovers where it wants to go.

TERMINAL offers a glimpse into that world.

Come closer.
Look longer.
There is always something else to discover.

From abstract to figurative, conceptual to experimental, I like exploring different styles, materials and ideas…

For me, being an artist is about staying curious, taking risks and never quite knowing what comes next…

And that’s exactly how I like it…

Monkey’s first visit to an art gallery… and she approved. 🐾🎨

We took a little trip to Málaga to visit a gallery, and it seems my newest studio companion has very good taste in art. 😂

Her first gallery visit was such a success that I’ll now be exhibiting three of my paintings there on Friday 23 October.

I think Monkey may have earned herself the title of Chief Art Critic. 🐈‍⬛

If you’d like to come along, DM me for an invite. I’d love to see you there.

First day at life drawing… and Monkey is already networking. 😂 She’s settling in beautifully and clearly has no intention of being a shy new arrival.

Life drawing classes? ✔️
Meeting new people? ✔️
Making herself comfortable in the studio? ✔️
Taking over everyone’s attention? Absolutely. 😂

I think she may have decided that being the studio cat is a full-time job.

At this rate, I’m expecting her to start giving feedback on the drawings next. 🎨🐈

Welcome to studio life, Monkey. You’ve found your people! ❤️

I couldn’t say it, so I painted it.

This painting came from the pain of losing my mother.
The empty bottles represent alcoholism, something that had such a profound effect on our lives.

The flying chair, leaving the house, represents the feeling of wanting to escape… of leaving home and everything behind.

There is sadness, loss and a lot of emotion in this painting.

I didn’t set out to explain all of this when I started painting. The images and symbols appeared as I worked, and slowly the painting became a way of expressing something I found very difficult to put into words.

This is an oil on canvas painting, which can be quite difficult to work with.

When I’m painting abstract or conceptual work, I often find myself drawn to other materials too such as acrylic paint, charcoal, oil crayons, sticks… sometimes whatever happens to be around the studio.

For me, these materials aren’t simply a way of adding colour to the canvas. They bring their own texture, movement and marks, and each one changes the way I respond to the painting.

I like to work instinctively, building up layers, taking things away and sometimes allowing the materials themselves to influence where the painting goes.

I never quite know what the image is going to become…

You forget about a painting… then find it again and fall in love with it.

I almost forgot this painting existed…

I painted this some time ago and then rolled it up and put it away in the attic. And there it stayed, completely forgotten.

Until last week, when I decided to unravel it.
And suddenly I thought… I really love this!

Sometimes a painting needs time away from you. Without remembering what I was trying to do or where I thought it was going, I could look at it with completely fresh eyes.

It felt playful, spontaneous and full of movement, so I’ve called it “Kids Stuff.”

I love the idea that something I had almost forgotten could come back into my life and still make me smile.
