FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 — WE'RE CLOSED!

We're closing Gyppo this Friday for our sold-out Land. Water. Hands. five-course dinner with Briceland Forest Farm!

Our kitchen will be busy turning beautiful locally grown ingredients into five courses for 45 guests, and we can't wait to see how it all comes together. A huge thank-you to everyone who reserved a seat!

But just because we're closed doesn't mean you should go hungry. If you're heading down to Shelter Cove, please go show some love to our friends at Shelter Cove Campground & Deli, Delgado's Pizza, and Mi Mochima! We're lucky to have these folks feeding our little community, and they'd love to see you.

We'll be back open Saturday, October 17. Thanks for supporting all of us out here on the Lost Coast! by @gyppoalemill

We've been working our way through the menu for Friday's Land. Water. Hands. dinner with Briceland Forest Farm, and this little cast-iron skillet is what we're sending out at the very end. Brown-butter cake, a cool creamy topping, and a piece of pumpkin brittle we've been experimenting with in the kitchen. It's a lot of work for something that's going to disappear in about four bites.

That's the fun of these dinners. We get to slow down, play with ingredients, fuss over the little details, and build a meal around what our neighbors are growing. Daniel and Taylor from Briceland Forest Farm will be joining us, and all 45 seats are officially sold out!

If you missed this one, reservations are now open for our annual Forager's Feast on Friday, November 13. Another five courses, this time celebrating the wild ingredients and people who know their way around the forests of the Lost Coast.

October is sold out. November is calling. Come hungry and a little curious.

Remember when I told you we were closing Gyppo because half the staff wanted to see Steel Pulse? Well, we did it. We grabbed pizza at The Lost Frenchman, headed to the Mateel, and danced our asses off. Watching my crew let loose after a long tourist season was pretty fantastic. We even brought along a few cases of Gyppo beer to donate.

But what really struck me was looking around that room. Teenagers, twenty-somethings, parents, grandparents, people in their seventies, all dancing together. That's what makes the Mateel Community Center so special. Steel Pulse has been bringing their music and message to our little corner of the world for years, and in a community that's been through some hard times, nights like this mean a lot. Different generations, different lives, all sharing the same dance floor.

By the end of the night, we were sweaty, exhausted, and ridiculously happy. And getting to experience that alongside the people I work with every day made it even better.

Thank you to the Mateel, Steel Pulse, and everyone who keeps live music alive out here. We needed that night.

One of the funny things about making Gyppo shirts in a tiny town is eventually seeing them somewhere they have absolutely no business being. At Reggae. On a trail. At the grocery store. On vacation. Sometimes on somebody I don’t even know, which still catches me off guard a little. Kristina wearing hers out in the wild is exactly how I like them best—not folded neatly on a shelf at Gyppo, but actually becoming somebody’s shirt.

All of our apparel is sourced and printed for us by Lotus Printing in Fortuna, and Cara has been helping us put Gyppo on shirts, hats and all kinds of other things for years. Then they leave the Lost Coast and we lose track of them. So now I’m curious: how far has one made it?

If you’ve got a photo of your Gyppo gear somewhere it probably didn’t expect to end up, drop it below. Bonus points for serious mileage. by @gyppoalemill

There’s a lot to love about the Lost Coast, but it’s the quirky little things that really make this place special.

Like Jenni’s bright red boat, parked on a grassy bluff overlooking the Pacific, with a toothy fish in a baseball cap behind the wheel. The kind of thing that makes you smile every time you drive by. We love Jenni’s boat. We love that it exists. And we love living in a place where nobody thinks twice about a fish captaining a boat on dry land.

And then there’s local artist Ken Nunes, who has a way of capturing all that Lost Coast character with a paintbrush. His version of Jenni’s boat is full of color, sunshine, and personality.

This Tuesday, October 13 at 6 PM, Ken is bringing Jenni’s boat to Gyppo for Paint & Sip!

Come spend an evening with good people, a cold beer, some paint on your fingers, and Ken showing you how to bring this little piece of the Lost Coast to life.

You don't have to know how to paint. That's half the fun. You'll laugh, learn a few things, and leave with a painting that actually means something to this place.

Because the Lost Coast isn't just the ocean, the mountains, and the sunsets. It's the people, the art, and all the wonderfully weird things in between.

I’m giving you almost a two weeks of warning because some of you apparently need it. Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, DJ Snowflake will be here, and the annual Gyppo costume contest is happening. Which means right now somebody on the Lost Coast is probably already constructing something wildly unnecessary in their garage while the rest of us are telling ourselves we can throw something together that afternoon.

Halloween in the Cove is one of those nights where everybody ends up everywhere. There’s Trunk or Treat at the lighthouse, where they literally hand out FULL-SIZE CANDY BARS, Mi Mochima and Lost Coast Adventure Tours have their lantern ride, and eventually a whole lot of strangely dressed people make their way to Gyppo. Kids get loaded up on sugar, adults get increasingly committed to their costumes, and the whole town gets a little weird for the night. Exactly as it should.

Saturday, October 31. DJ Snowflake. Costume contest. You have the next two weeks to make questionable decisions with a glue gun. by @gyppoalemill

We're down to just FOUR tickets for our first Land. Water. Hands. dinner with Briceland Forest Farm this Friday, October 16!

Our kitchen has been working on a pretty incredible five-course menu celebrating what Briceland Forest Farm is growing right now. Crispy chèvre, winter squash velouté, beer-braised short ribs, and a rose-honey skillet cake to finish. Take a peek at the full menu!

We'll kick things off at 6 PM with a welcome drink, just in time to watch the sun settle over the Pacific. Optional beer, beer/wine hybrid, cocktail, and non-alcoholic pairings will be available for purchase.

But what I'm most excited about isn't just the food. It's bringing our local farmers and community together around the same table. Getting to know the people who grow our food, hearing their stories, and spending an evening connecting over a really good meal. That's what we're hoping to build with this winter dinner series.

Ticket sales close Monday morning, October 12, so if you've been thinking about joining us, this is your last chance!

Friday, October 16 | 6 PM | Gyppo Ale Mill

Four chairs left at the table. We'd love to have you in one of them.

Two patties. Double bacon. Cheese melting down into all the places cheese is supposed to go. Lettuce and tomato pretending they're contributing something responsible. A soft bun trying its absolute best to keep the whole operation together. This is not a burger you casually pick at while having a thoughtful conversation. Once you pick it up, you've made a commitment.

Then comes the only decision we cannot make for you: fries or tots? Crispy salty fries catching everything that falls out of the burger, or a pile of crunchy little potato barrels that are objectively more fun to eat. We have strong opinions behind the bar. None of us agree.

Fries or tots? Pick a side. We're prepared to judge you quietly.

I don’t remember exactly what dessert this was, which feels like a terrible admission considering we made it. But I do remember this part of the night. By dessert, the room has completely changed. People who sat down a couple hours earlier are leaning across the table talking, wine glasses have migrated, nobody is sitting quite where they started, and then the last plates come out of the kitchen.

That’s what we’re building toward again on October 16 with Briceland Forest Farm. Five courses, 45 people, and Daniel and Taylor from the Briceland Forest Farm sitting down with us while we cook with food they grew just up the road. We’re working through every plate now, including what gets to be the final bite of the night. No pressure, dessert.

October 16. Come hungry and leave yourself room for course five. Find more infor and reserve your seat by visiting gyppo dot com. by @gyppoalemill

We drive past places like this all the time. Bull Creek is close enough that it somehow becomes one of those things you keep saying you’ll do later. I’ve asked the kids a hundred times, “Want to go for a walk in the redwoods?” and usually the answer is some version of not really. This time they said yes, so we pulled over and did the loop.

And I’m so glad we did. They ran around, looked up, took pictures, laughed, stopped to actually notice how huge everything was. At the end they were both like, “Okay, that was actually really cool.” Which felt like a tiny victory. We spend so much time moving through the same roads, the same forests, the same coastline that it’s easy to forget how ridiculous it is that this is our everyday scenery.

Maybe that’s part of why we document everything now. Not because the moment didn’t happen without the photo, but because sometimes you want to remember that you actually stopped.

If you’re coming to Gyppo, leave a little room in the day for the places you usually drive past. The Lost Coast is full of them.

Linda Winkler is basically part of the Gyppo crew, even if you’re probably never going to see her in the official staff photo. She’s here every week. She plays cribbage with Bryan and Dave, brings in her Lost Coast-inspired jewelry, stays for the music, and half the time ends up helping with sound. She’s also the one who started sending me these photos. At first they felt rare—she’d catch the crew still hanging out after a shift and text me something like, “Your team is so fun.” Now she sends them all the time. I think I got two last week.

That’s the part that gets me. They work hard together, clean the place down, clock out—and then they stay. They grab a drink, laugh, play cards, talk to regulars, and keep being around each other even when nobody is paying them to. And I hear about them everywhere else too. At the grocery store, getting coffee, around town—someone is always telling me Erin was amazing, Eric took great care of them, Vitali made their night, or the kitchen absolutely nailed dinner. That kind of thing is hard to manufacture. We’re just really lucky to have a crew that works hard together and genuinely seems to like being together too.

If someone on this team has made your night lately, tell them. They deserve to hear it.
