I just mean you seem to be surviving freelance & raising a kid. I’m not coming for your gig, I just wanna try to get an idea of fuckin’ how.”“If I was trying to protect my gig, I’d say ‘don’t become a tour guide.’” “The thought had occurred to me.” I had known about Nathaniel’s tours but hadn’t managed to attend until a friend set a date. I was immediately hooked. Nathaniel opened by explaining that he had been diagnosed with autism, which meant that while he was bad at eye contact he was good at talking in detail about communist history for hours. The tour was fascinating & I resolved to not miss another if I could help it. I came to other tours solo. “I’ve been on that one already.”“Honestly I could go five times & get something new out of it, there’s so much information!”Another guest asks me about police brutality. I try to summarize two years. “Hey Nathaniel, been beat up by the cops yet?”“Not yet. I think I’m too old. I heard them talking about targeting younger people, beacuse if it’s someone’s first time at the demo & you make it bad enough, they might not come back.”When I recall the anecdote to friends outside Berlin, they wince & curse. The locals don’t bat an eye, they follow the logic. I laugh; because while I can’t guess his age, I don’t think of us as coming from different generations. Then again, he has a beard & a child, both of which age a person. “Oh, is it the baby face? I should start telling them I’m nearly 40.” A friend working as a tour guide was a fan of Nathaniel, too. Nathaniel was an inspiration to another colleague also — it seems that in the same way that there are comics’ comics, comedians who (irresepctive of popuar sucess) are reliably referenced by their colleagues, Nathaniel has inspired a good portion of today’s working tour guides.[a white bearded man gestures in front of the ruins of a magnificent train station] by @h.p.loveshaft

Last weekend, in the blistering cold, I tried to give a tour of the city centre for the very first time. As you can guess, it was a disaster! There is so much information I wanted to share, that I didn’t get to half of it. I love being bad at things: it feels like learning. If every poet has a thousand awful poems in them that they need to purge before they produce good ones, I think a similar thing can be said of tour guides. So, only 999 to go!It appears that guiding is also like jazz: it is in the history you don’t share, or the notes you don’t play. If you’d like to join me, I’ll be doing this regularly (or dog willing, by appointment) until bills are paid. Hey everyone! There were a couple of things Osama wanted to share. First, Osama let us know that with rising prices, he and his family need about $100 a day to meet their needs and the fundraiser has not been receiving enough for that. Second, the tent he is staying in has been really hot and there have been mosquitoes and other insects in there that bite him and his family at night, both of which are making life really hard for him and his family. Also, there’s currently a raffle fundraiser being hosted by @groupforreading_pdx where the winner receives a hand-bound copy of The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin, details for that are in the last slide! What are we doing to build networks outside these platforms? I have my letter, but it is more of a one-way communication — people don’t often reply. It has also not proven to be an effective method of getting people to events, which is why I’m still here. But this doesn’t seem to be working, either. Maybe it’s time to go back to old-fashioned flyers. Tell me about your alternate platforms, newsletters & more. If you want to tell me in person, you have the chance to do so soon: on Thursday, I will have the honor of performing for Palestinian NRW-based drag king Pulă M King at Wein Salon, alongside the achingly beautiful Queen Justmean! Pulă M has been organising a Drag Space in his home turf & I’m so excited to meet this legend in the flesh I often joke about how drag kings go above & beyond in terms of love & support. I also recently made a friend who sent me home with headphones & a new shirt. When another friend expressed surprise at such abundant generosity, I shrugged. “Fucken’ Arabs man, I dunno.” What I’m saying is -- not to stereotype -- but nothing could have prepared me for the overflowing hospitality of an Arab drag king. I hope you come out.
