Temple motifs and celestial figures carved into traditional woodwork. Depicted in this exhibition are three distinct wooden panels.

The top is an Annapakshi (mystical swan) wood panel originating from 19th-century carved into antique teak. The middle panel depicting Lord Murugan between his consorts, Valli and Devayani, is usually intended as a vathilthala (door lintel). And the last panel exhibits Gajalakshmi seated on a lotus, flanked by ceremonial elephants performing an abhisheka (water lustration) with their trunks.

A collection of hand-painted, carved wooden busts depicting iconic Theyyam mukathezhuthu and varying markings based on region and ritual.

There are more than 400 distinct patterns for Theyyam make-up, implying status and lineage of the represented deity. For example, Kuttichathan is showcased by Kozhipushpam, a highly detailed, curvilinear design that resembles a stylized bird feather or a delicate flower curlique to symbolize the trickster personality.

Theyyam — a profound socio-religious ritual art form native to North Malabar. Kerala Folklore Museum’s second floor, where this display is exhibited, is dedicated to performing arts, ritual theater, and dance-drama traditions.

The word Theyyam is derived from Daivam, which translates to “human form of god.” The performer transitions to a trance state to embody the ancestral spirit. The vibrant costumes are made of coconut fronds, bamboo pieces, and dyed cloths. The face make-up implies the deity’s benevolence, heroic portrayal, or fierce stance. This is also defined with the usage of a white, yellow, or red face, outlined with intricate black paint to highlight the features of the face. The layered skirt is designed to create a dramatic, sweeping silhouette during fast-paced, hypnotic dances.

Pacha Vesham - a noble, virtuous, and potentially divine protagonist, like Arjunan and the Pandavas. The character is stylized with the signature kireedam, chutti (white beard frame), and green make-up.

This miniature is an 18th century wooden puppet, commonly used in Paavakathakali to depict parables from Hindu epics.

A fascinating collision of 19th century European ingenuity and South Indian artistry, this image presents a singing bird automation cage clock. Inspired by the French’s Bontems and Germany’s Karl Griesbaum, a key mechanism hidden at the base animates the birds when wound. The internal clockwork gears and levers allow the birds to synchronize while flapping their wings, tilting their heads, and chirping from their beaks. The birdsongs are pneumatic and are produced from a concealed leather bellow that activates a pitch-changing sliding whistle.

Nettipattam - gold-plated copper forehead caparison, traditionally adorned over the majestic heads of our gentle giants, the ceremonial elephants, during festivities. The prominent gold semi-spheres and crescents represent the Thrimurthi (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), while the surrounding components are symbolic to planets, stars, and various sub-deities. Additionally, temple bells are hung around the elephant’s neck and the beast is decorated with curlicues of sandalwood paste and such.
