Habiba was born in a remote area of Afghanistan into a Hazara family - an ethnic minority group with a history of persecution in the country. When she was eight, her family moved to Kabul. Throughout high school, Habiba wanted to do sports, but there were no accessible opportunities due to cultural and financial barriers. Habiba joined Free to Run’s programs as a teenager in 2018.

When the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Habiba and five other girls left Afghanistan together. They traveled to the Pakistan border, passing many checkpoints where Taliban forces could have stopped them. Though others were arrested, Habiba’s group made it through. After eight difficult months, they were granted refuge in Italy.

Although she was relieved to be out of Afghanistan, communication with her family was limited. Girls and women in Afghanistan, including Habiba’s loved ones, could no longer access many basic rights. Though she felt safe in comparison, the uncertainty was emotionally hard.

Habiba believes that running continues to support her mental health. When things are hard for her family back in Afghanistan, she finds that running helps her cope This August, Habiba led an Underground Run in Rome.

“I want to raise awareness that on the other side of the world there are women who are not free and allowed to run. Most importantly that there are organizations such as Free to Run who are supporting and empowering women in those countries.”

Huge thank you to my family and friends for cheering me on every step of the way at the Sydney Marathon!
I ran today in support of @freetorunngo an incredible organization empowering women and girls in conflict-affected regions through sports and leadership and completing my dream Marathon. Having been part of their program myself back in 2018, this mission is deeply close to my heart.
