I’ve never stuck my face that close to an art piece before.
I recently visited @asianartmuseum to see the Ha Chong-Hyun retrospective and I wasn’t expecting to feel the work. Emotionally and physically.

He uses hemp cloth and burlap as his main mediums. Materials that carry the weight of the Korean War. He pushes oil paint through the back of them, forcing texture through something that was never meant for painting.

It made me think about what it means to be a designer right now. We have tools we’re proud we’ve learned. But what happens when you push past what the tool was meant for?

That tension is what made @hachonghyun iconic. And it’s a reminder that curiosity and experimentation are the tools that never get old.

The retrospective is on view through January 25, 2027. Check it out if you’re in SF. Let me know in the comments how this inspires you.

Reposted @tinakimgallery Today is your last chance to see works by Ha Chong-Hyun at Art Basel Paris.

Our booth (O.A2) features works from Ha’s signature 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘫𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 series, in which the artist pushes oil paint through the back of densely woven hemp fabric. The term “conjunction” references the unmediated meeting of the artist’s method and his materials, and has been a decades-long project for the artist. Ha began making his 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘫𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 paintings in the 1970s in Post-War Korea, where his use of hemp, a functional fabric used to transport goods, distinguished his work from traditional Western canvas. He is considered a pioneering member of the Korean Dansaekhwa movement, alongside other artists on view in our booth, such as Park Seo-Bo and Kim Tschang-Yeul.

𝘏𝘢 𝘊𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘏𝘺𝘶𝘯: 𝘙𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦, Ha’s first North America institutional exhibition, is currently on view at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco through January 2027.

Art Basel Paris 2026 will close today, October 23, at 7 PM.

Now on view at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, “Ha Chong-Hyun: Retrospective” brings together more than 50 paintings spanning over six decades. Curated by Sunjung Kim, the exhibition traces Ha from his early experiments with thread and flame to his iconic Conjunction series.

Born in 1935 and coming of age after the Korean War, Ha often painted on burlap sacks once used to ship rice to South Korea. In 1974, he began the Conjunction series, developing his signature “back-pressure” method of pushing thick oil painting through the back of the canvas, seeping through the weave to the front.

The show is on view now through Janurary 25, and thank you so much again to the Asian Art Museum for making this visit possible!

@hachonghyun makes you rethink how a painting is made—starting from the back of the canvas.

His retrospective at San Francisco’s @asianartmuseum is a reason to slow down and look closer. The raised textures, the shift from earthy tones to vivid color, the history behind his materials—there’s so much to take in beyond the first glance.

I’ve seen his work before, but experiencing so many pieces together gave me a whole new appreciation for his process. Put this on your next San Francisco museum day itinerary 🤍

What makes Dansaekhwa one of Asia’s most influential 20th-century art movements? It reinvented traditional painting through hands-on, physical craft.

As Korea’s post-war monochrome movement, Dansaekhwa abandoned conventional image-making to focus entirely on raw materials and human gesture. Pioneer Ha Chong-Hyun (@hachonghyun) pushed this idea to its limit by forcing thick oil paint through the back of coarse burlap—a signature technique (bae-bae-seol, or back-pressure) that turns paint into a 3D, physical experience.

Reposted @artdrunk My relationship with Korea began with Ha Chong-Hyun (@hachonghyun). The minimalism of his work offered much of a clean slate when I first embarked on the professional chapter of ArtDrunk. What I’ve largely interpreted as a calm, meditative practice of repetitive strokes, I now interpret as something more laborious. A pushing through of defined structures, defined norms. But that initial force only lays the groundwork. The beauty of his whole process comes through primarily with the remaining strokes that come from the top surface. Patterns. Expressions. Creativity that distinguishes one’s labor from another.

I get much needed inspiration from retrospectives like this at the Asian Art Museum (@asianartmuseum). It’s a look back on the labor of one artist over decades. But also a look back at the evolution of that labor. A consistent vision that manifests in many forms, the same way that I may wander from one idea to the next in my own work.

Thanks to Soyoung Lee, CEO of AAM, for the tour!
