The fight for divestment in Hackney may yet be won.

In this piece, Gwen Jones documents Hackney Council’s long history of opposition to pro-divestment campaigning, revealing a major lack of transparency in its decision-making processes - with key discussions taking place away from public view, and private pro-Israel lobby groups being invited to the table while workers and residents are consistently ignored.

‘As Hackney goes to the polls, at issue is not only divestment, but whether the council’s fundamental decision-making structures are actually fit for purpose.’

‘For campaigners, the past five years have revealed a system in which oversight, consultation and access – at least by workers and residents – are sorely lacking.’

‘Whether that system is able to withstand mounting political pressure will depend, like much else, on what may be Hackney’s most consequential elections in decades.’

HAFZ Open Meeting — Monday 9 November, 7pm 🇵🇸

Join us for an open meeting of the Hackney Apartheid-Free Zone to learn more about our community-led boycott in support of Palestine.

We’ll be joined by a guest speaker sharing details of the new council-led ‘Who Owns Hackney’ project. This initiative seeks to map space, place and ownership in Hackney and explores how spaces in the borough can be reclaimed for community benefit.

We’ll also carry out our own collective mapping of the borough to help shape HAFZ’s outreach in the months ahead. We’ll identify supportive local businesses, organisations, and campaigns to help build the grassroots power we need to push for change.

All are welcome! Come along to learn more about our borough, meet others locally, and help grow our campaign. Our community boycott only works if we build it together.

Please share widely!

The Labour party is exploiting the ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion to silence Palestine solidarity in local government.

Under Starmer, empowered by scandal associated think tank Labour Together, the Labour leadership used false claims of anti-semitism to purge the party of leftists and those showing support for Palestine. We saw this up to the May local elections, when numerous Labour councillors were de-selected for displaying solidarity with Palestine, including in Hackney.

This tactic continues under Burnham, with anti-semitism smears still being used to undermine and discredit left-wing opposition.

Labour’s policy to refuse to work with the Greens in local councils, unless local parties drop the motion, threatens to throw multiple councils where coalition agreements are currently in place into chaos, disrupting essential services - like housing and education - on which residents depend.

Labour is putting the defense of Zionism above the vital needs of ordinary residents.

All while many Labour councillors continue to publically defend the genocide in Gaza as Israel’s legitimate self-defense.

The Labour establishment and media continue to collude to silence, punish and discredit solidarity with Palestine at all levels of government. We cannot allow manufactured outrage to weaken our movement, or undermine the ability of local governments to provide for their constituents. by @hackney4pal

*26/10 we will be at Green Alley Studios. Prisoner letter writing is moving! After many months at Ridley Road we are moving the group to @peoplesletters. Come join us Tuesday 27 October, 5pm-7pm, and every Tuesday after for an opportunity to write to Palestine solidarity prisoners and others behind bars.

This is both a letter writing group and a space for likeminded community.

Letter-writing material provided, as well as information about the current Palestine political prisoners. We can give you guidance on what to write (or draw!), whether it’s your first letter to a prisoner, or first letter to anyone.

Join us on Tuesdays to remind ourselves and each other, that prisoners are not forgotten, that we are stronger than any wall placed between us. by @hackney4pal
