Introducing 2026 Joop Swart Masterclass participant Hadeer Mahmoud (@hadeermahmoud1). Hadeer is an Egyptian photojournalist and documentary photographer whose work explores women’s rights, displacement, and the lived experiences of marginalized communities.Her project ‘Banat Gaza’ follows four sisters from Khan Younis who fled Gaza after 7 October 2023, and rebuilt their lives in Egypt a month later. Centered on Abeer, the eldest sister, the work explores displacement and sisterhood, as the family navigates life in exile through a small business selling handmade bags and traditional Palestinian clothing that reflect their heritage. In Egypt, Abeer felt a strong responsibility to help her sisters rebuild their lives: “I’m the one who raised them, not my mother” she told the photographer. While adapting to a new reality, the sisters continue to preserve memories of home, holding onto the hope of one day returning to Gaza.Seen here is a selection of photographs from ‘Banat Gaza’, Egypt, by Hadeer Mahmoud, @reuters:1. Leave the Nile behind, drive through honking traffic clogged streets of the crumbling Belle Époque façades of Cairo’s Downtown, loop around elevated highways that look down onto raw brick slums hung with washing lines and electricity cables, past the silent tomb-houses of the City of the Dead, along the Suez road walled with military compounds. It is a route that follows a time-line of modern Egyptian history, from the Khediv Ismail, who built Downtown at the end of the 19th century to emulate Paris, to the nationalist monuments of Lt-Colonel Gamal Nasser, who ousted colonial rule in a coup in 1952, past the parade viewing stand where his successor, Anwar Sadat, was assassinated in 1981, and the Presidential Palace from where his successor, Hosni Mubarak, resigned in the face of the Arab Spring protests in 2011, and from where Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s only democratically elected President, was arrested after a year in office, as the army took back control, and another General, Abdel Fattah Sisi, took off his military uniform and put on a business suit to become President in 2014.Assignment for The Economist 1843Story by Wendell Steavenson by @hadeermahmoud1

Egypt’s new pyramid scheme A vast new capital is being built in the desert.The government hopes it will put the country on the map againCastles built on sand may sound like a pipe dream. But 40km down the road from Cairo, a vast new city has sprung up out of the desert. Egypt’s New Capital is designed on a grand scale, with room for 6m inhabitants.Not all Egyptians are on board. The city is regarded by some as a vanity project of President Sisi, an ex-general who seized power in 2013. The price tag of property in the New Capital would be unaffordable for most ordinary people.Its supporters say that the project will help reinstate Egypt as a powerhouse in the region. With a tech district billed as “Egypt’s Silicon Valley,” an Olympic stadium, and several international universities, the New Capital represents the country’s bid to rejuvenate its image by turning desert sand into valuable real estate.Castles built on sand may sound like a pipe dream. Sherif El-Abd, the Egyptian hiker and the second Egyptian to climb Mount Everest, organized meetups for the hiking community in Egypt. He invited anyone interested in the sport to join hiking experiences in Wadi Degla Protected Area twice a week during the month of Ramadan. These gatherings were designed as a social experience to encourage people to hike, meet one another, and share the moment of breaking the fast together in nature. I was very happy to be there and to take part in this beautiful experience. by @hadeermahmoud1

When I went to Alexandria to photograph the tram in its final days, it brought back memories of the Cairo tram and how it was part of my childhood. I remember my father taking me on rides just to watch the city and enjoy it, even though we had a car — this felt like a different kind of outing… pure happiness.As I grew older, I started riding it for leisure or on my way back from university, just to enjoy the city and look at the buildings of Heliopolis, without worrying about time then…I feel deep sadness that the cities we know are fading away, and with them, our memories and our identity. There is no logic in what is happening. by @hadeermahmoud1
