An Unreal Experience withAn Elusive Twin😍 Select ur fav frame 1-10And this time too it was during a birding trip!!!The usual wildlife spotting enquires from experts involves a request- “will it be possible to sight a nilgiri marten?”. My typical response to this is always a big NOO! The reason-Everyone in this field is aware about the rarity of being blessed with a glimpse of one of them in the wild. Getting a glimpse of these illusive beings is close to impossible, let alone getting a good picture of them.But sometimes during casual trekking trips and at times during birding trips these illusive guys appear for seconds and vanish into thin air. And the people blessed with such a sight are those who are not even aware of the existence and importance of such a species 😁. Undescribed 😁 "a new Species"...Rainbow snake !A new species of nonvenomous shield tail snake from the genus melanophidium which we came across during one of our herping trips in Munnar.@ria_renjith and myself was trying to track down a tiny night frog which was calling out load close to a water body. Then @ria_renjith started flashing light at me, she does that generally when she finds something interesting. But this time it was something magical, a glittering snake 😍 Something which I haven't seen before. It was little tough to photograph this quick moving snake before it moved into the crevices.But to our surprise we came to know this is an undescribed species🤩🤩🤩 A new species, now someone will study on it and then this beautiful chap will get a beautiful second name. A 4 days of wait behind this Romantic Guy 😍 Read more👇🏻👇🏻It took four long nights of waiting all for this charming little guy to appear in the spot I love watching him the most, croaking away like a true showman. 😅🔴Day 1: I first spotted him perched on hydrangea leaves it felt like the beginning of something special.🟠Day 2: He returned and chose to sit on a dried hydrangea bloom. Classy. 😄🟡Day 3: He settled on a small patch of hydrangea, but it was too close to the wall for me to get the shot I wanted.🟢 Day 4: Finally, the photo I’ve posted here! 🤩🤩The wait was absolutely worth it. I left with a full heart, even if I spent most of my bedtime hanging out with this inch-sized friend. 💚😁Who says romance is just for humans? How Frogs Eat 😱😱😱We all know frogs help control insect populations, but very few of us ever get to witness how they actually catch and swallow their prey.When the subject itself is barely an inch long and perfectly camouflaged, just finding it is a challenge. Watching it hunt is pure luck.During my last herping trip, after my guests had finished photographing this beautiful Travancore Bush Frog, I decided to spend a few more minutes with it. It’s not a species we come across often in Munnar, so I wanted a few images for myself.Then, out of nowhere, a housefly landed on the very same grass blade where the frog was resting. In the blink of an eye… it was gone.I was lucky enough to witness the entire hunt through my viewfinder, but neither me nor my camera was fast enough to capture that lightning fast strike. I immediately switched to video mode, and what happened next was something I’ve been hoping to see for years.Even though I spend almost every monsoon night herping, I’ve rarely witnessed a complete hunting sequence like this. I guess there’s a time for everything.It was a bad day for the fly… but a memorable night for me and a great meal for this tiny, beautiful frog. 🐸🪰Note: Please bear with the shaky video! 😅 It was incredibly windy… and my hands aren’t exactly the steadiest either. by @hadlee_renjith

The Camouflage King Frog !You know how difficult it is to find a Water Droplet Frog. Its incredible camouflage makes it one of the most challenging frogs to spot, and for many naturalists and wildlife photographers, finding one is a dream and photographing it is an even bigger reward.My recent Wayanad trip turned out to be a memorable one when we finally found this elusive little gem.Spotting one at night is hard enough, but finding one in broad daylight is almost unheard of. We got incredibly lucky. Strangely, it was calling during the day, which at least helped narrow down the search area. But these frogs usually stay high up in the trees, so locating the exact individual was anything but easy.Every time we moved towards the call, it would fall silent. So I stepped back, waited patiently for about 10 minutes, and listened again. This game continued over and over. Highly venomous 🛑❗️❗️❗️The highly venomous Common Krait and the harmless Common Wolf Snake are frequently mistaken for one another.Scales: Kraits have an enlarged, distinct row of six-sided (hexagonal) scales running down the center of their spine. Wolf snakes have uniformly shaped scales across their back.Head: A wolf snake has a broader, flatter head that is visibly distinct from its neck. A krait’s head is narrower and blends smoothly into its body.Color and Bands: The krait is typically glossy black or bluish-black with distinct, thin white or yellowish crossbands. The wolf snake is usually brownish-grey with broken or irregular bands.Body Shape: Kraits have a slightly triangular body with a sharp, ridged backbone. The Yellow Bellied This species is a great reminder that even the most ordinary-looking frogs can reveal beautiful hidden colors when viewed from the right angle.Despite the name Raorchestes flaviventris (“yellow-bellied”), not every individual has a distinctly yellow belly. In fact:* Many individuals have a cream, off-white, or pale grey ventrum.* Some show a yellow wash only on the throat, groin, or underside of the limbs.* A bright yellow belly appears to be variable and may differ between individuals, sexes, age classes, or even with breeding condition and time of day.This is one reason why belly colour alone is not considered a reliable field character for identifying the species. Researchers instead rely on a combination of morphology, call, locality, and increasingly, genetic data.It’s a good reminder that scientific names often reflect the specimen that was originally described, not necessarily the full range of variation seen across the species. The frog that opened an entirely new world for me.A tiny frog that transformed what used to be six months of “off-season” into the busiest and most exciting part of my year.It all began in 2012 when Arun Kanagavel, a researcher from Hyderabad, arrived in Munnar to study this species as part of his EDGE project. At that time, I was working with Kestrel Adventures. We had colleagues who were experts in birds, plants, and wildlife, but none of us including me knew much about frogs. In fact, I barely knew the difference between a frog and a toad. To me, every frog was simply… a toad. 😅But I was always eager to learn anything new.The monsoon was our off-season. After the busy tourism months from November to March, most of us took a break. Arun was looking for a local person to accompany him during his night surveys, but none of my colleagues were interested. Somehow, the job landed on me. I accepted half-heartedly not because I loved frogs, but because it was something completely new.That very night, I joined him.I had no idea what was happening in the forest. Night after night we searched, but without success. I also tried my best to find the frog, though I honestly didn’t know what I was looking for.About a week later, we explored a new location near the vast tea estates of Munnar. After nearly two hours of searching, Arun suddenly shouted in excitement,“Heyyyyy… I found it!”I ran towards him, thrilled to finally see this mysterious, rare frog.And then… I was shocked. 😀All this time, I had imagined we were searching for a frog the size of a large toad around 3 or 4 inches long. Instead, the frog was only slightly bigger than a segment of my index finger. Unconditional Love ❤️ Watching a bonnet macaque mother with her little one was a beautiful reminder of what motherhood looks like in the wild. The youngster kept biting and pulling at her skin, yet she stayed incredibly patient, never pushing it away. Moments later, she gently nursed her baby as if nothing had happened. Drenched but worth it !!!Getting completely soaked in the rain, with every piece of gear dripping wet but when it’s for shooting Padayappa, none of that matters. Moments like these are priceless. Standing in the rain, waiting patiently for that one perfect frame, watching this gentle giant in his world… it’s exactly why I do what I do.
