Athlete Mental Health Week. If you know me, you know that my journey as an athlete has been anything but easy. There have been many moments in my life when I felt like my value as a person was tied to how I performed on the ice. When you’re labeled an athlete, people often forget everything else that you might be carrying at the same time. But what I have learned is that there is a human being beneath that uniform. The pressure that student-athletes feel from their environments doesn’t just disappear when the game ends, and neither do our expectations of ourselves. There is an unseen weight that comes with carrying an identity that feels one-dimensional. No athlete ever wants to be viewed as weak or less than their peers. I have had many moments in my hockey career when the battles I faced in my head felt too hard to explain to anyone else, so I would sit with them in silence. For a long time, I thought that meant I was being strong. That if I could endure something quietly and on my own, I would be a better person because of it. But since then, I have learned that real strength comes from the endurance, grace, and courage that comes with asking for help. The adversity that I have faced as an athlete is a privilege and a perspective I am grateful to know. Being human is not about perfection; it’s about the persistence that comes with showing up for yourself every day, even when it feels like there is no gas left in the tank. Check in on your teammates, rely on your people, and give yourself grace. If you can be anything in this life, I encourage you to be kind, because everybody is facing their own uphill battle that you can’t see. Within this journey of mine, I have gained one of the most important things in my life: Morgan’s Message. A nonprofit organization formed in honor of Duke Lacrosse player Morgan Rodgers, who lost her battle to her own mental health in 2019. This week is Athlete Mental Health Week (Feb 2–8), led by Athletes for Hope, and as an @morgansmessage ambassador, I’m proud to help break the stigma surrounding mental health in athletes. #AthleteMentalHealthWeek #MorgansMessage by @hadleyaustin_
