@women_working_with_clay_symp thank you so much for this incredible experience. Having the opportunity to assist and learn from female ceramic artists, and meet other women who are artists was so special. I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity and hope to be able to attend again in the future! by @hadleyrose_art
My Grandfather, the Tobacco Farmer | My Grandfather, the Tobacco Farmer, consists of 10 tobacco leaves in a tobacco basket, and 250 cigarettes, 200 smoked and 50 new cigarettes. I decided on the number of 10 tobacco leaves, each representing 100 million dollars, because in 1997 tobacco brought in 1 billion dollars in revenue for Kentucky. The 250 cigarettes represent somewhat of a memorial. Each year, of all lung cancer deaths in Kentucky, 80 percent were due to or related to smoking. 200 are smoked, which is 80% of all that I made, while the other fifty are unsmoked, representing lung cancer deaths unrelated to tobacco. The leaves are meant to signify the work that my grandfather, who used to farm tobacco and was a single father for a long time, put in to support my mother, sending her to college, and buying her first car. It also is an ode to Kentucky, as tobacco is a large source of revenue for many farmers as well as the state itself. By displaying the two together my piece represents that despite the financial benefit tobacco brings to Kentucky, it also has a large toll on many Kentucky residents by @hadleyrose_art
Untitled | For this project, I made nine vases, each one depicting a female music artist who has inspired me and made an impact on my life. The artists I have chosen are Patti Smith, Missy Dabice, Kathleen Hanna, Bjork, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, and Kim Deal. I decided on this project because female musicians are often not as accredited as their male counterparts. It also connects to two parts of my identity – both as a woman, as well as a music lover. In my family, music is something that is highly valued and music has always been a major part of my life. The women I chose for this project are not just any female artist I could think of. Each artist has shown me, in one way or another, what it is to be a woman, and has gone against stereotypes which are commonly thrown at women. I wanted to commemorate each of them for both their music, which has been largely impactful to me, as well as for showing me that you do not have to stay in the box someone labels you as. For the surface, I used underglaze around the frame, where the decal is shown, pulling from each artists’ album art in some small way. For glaze, I used floating red. Additionally; while pulling each vase, I listened to the music from the artists of which vase I was making to try and encapsulate what their music was to me through the form. by @hadleyrose_art
