The Ashadh Night

Under the Ashadh night sky, with monsoon clouds gathering above a land still waiting for rain, her voice seemed to bring a sense of calm to the atmosphere. The depth, intricacy and meditative quality of the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition transformed the courtyards of the city palace Kotah into a space of quiet contemplation and spiritual resonance.

The Artists

Vidushi Manjiri Aasnare Kelkar, a distinguished exponent of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana, led the evening with a recital marked by depth, precision and emotional nuance.

She was accompanied by:

• Pt. Vinod Lele — Tabla
• Pt. Vinay Mishra — Harmonium

Together, the artists created an intimate musical dialogue that resonated beautifully within the historic setting of Darikhana Chabootra at Kotah Garh.

The Royal Family of Kotah
@theroyalfamilyofkotah

For decades, the Royal Family of Kotah has nurtured and supported Indian classical music traditions, most notably through the annual concerts organised in remembrance of the birth anniversary of Bade Durbar, Late H.H. Shri Brijraj Singh Sahib — a tradition that continues to this day.

Baithak Virasat has been fortunate to receive the encouragement and support of the Royal Family since its inception. This recital marked the fifth Baithak to be hosted within a heritage space under their patronage.

We express our sincere gratitude to Maharao Sahib @ijyaraj Shri Ijyaraj Singh Ji, Rajmata Saheba Uttara Devi Ji, and Maharaj Kumar Sahib Shri Jaidev Singh Ji @jaidevkotah for their continued support of the initiative and for gracing the evening with their presence.

The Community

From Gen Z listeners to those who have spent a lifetime with classical music, from seasoned rasikas to those attending their very first classical recital, people from different generations gathered at Kotah Garh that evening.

Perhaps we are witnessing an important moment in Kota. At a time when much of our lives are moving towards screens and virtual interactions, meaningful shared experiences are becoming increasingly valuable. More and more people seem to be seeking spaces for conversation, reflection, art and human connection.

Have you ever attended a Dhrupad concert?

The oldest surviving tradition of Hindustani classical music, Dhrupad traces its spiritual origins to the ancient chants of the Samaveda. Deeply meditative and devotional in nature, it values purity of sound, precision of pitch, and rhythmic discipline over display and virtuosity.

Swipe through to discover the timeless world of Dhrupad. taken in Kota, Rajasthan by @hadotiheritagewalks

Sacred Mornings
Presented by
Pranjal Agrawal Investments

The reason for choosing the ancient ghats as the stage for our first Sacred Morning was simple — the Chambal River is the foremost reason for Kota’s existence.

The kings who built this city chose this land because of this ancient river, known in the scriptures as Charmanyavati.

Our new series, Sacred Morning, is a tribute to Mother Chambal, to the people who built this city on her banks, to the Naga Sadhus who once called these ghats their home, and to the countless lives that passed along these shores through the centuries. taken in Chambal River, Kota by @hadotiheritagewalks

The Perfomance!
The Odissi recital at the ghats of the Chambal was no ordinary performance.

It was the writing of a new chapter upon the centuries-old Burj of Badi Samadh — where heritage, nature and classical arts came together in a moment that the city had never witnessed before.

The audience -
Drawn by an invisible and universal pull towards what is ancient, pure and divine, a gathering of Rasikas found its way to the ghats of the Chambal that morning.

Many arrived seeking something, though few could have named it.

At first, they watched closely, trying to understand the vocabulary of Odissi — the gestures, the movements, the rhythm of the form. But gradually, understanding gave way to surrender.

They surrendered to the beauty of the Chambal, to the grace of Anushree Padmanabha’s dance, and to the breathtaking stillness of the historic Burj of Samadh that stood witness to the morning.

For a brief moment, time seemed to slow, and the boundaries between art, nature and heritage quietly dissolved.

The Time!
Kota witnessed something rare.

The centuries-old ghats seemed to come alive, while the ever-flowing mighty Sadaneera Chambal stood still in spirit as it flowed beside them.

A new chapter was written in the cultural history of the city as an Odissi dance recital unfolded on the historic ghats of the Chambal — perhaps for the very first time in centuries, if ever before.

For one unforgettable morning, heritage, nature and classical arts became one.

The Artist-
Anushree Padmanabha, an accomplished exponent of Odissi, carries a grace that speaks even beyond her dance. A brilliant artist and a vibrant spirit, she brought both precision and presence to the morning.

As the audience watched her performance in wonder, she herself seemed equally captivated by her surroundings. The ancient Burj of Badi Samadh, the timeless flow of the Chambal, and the gentle rays of the morning sun became silent participants in the recital.

In those moments, it felt as though the dancer was not merely performing before the landscape, but was in quiet conversation with it.

The Partner-

by @hadotiheritagewalks

What if Jhala House could sustain itself after restoration?

Imagine a living heritage space—not a silent monument.

• Daily evening performances of music, dance, theatre and storytelling.
• A permanent Kota Doria weaving exhibition and artisan shop.
• Kota miniature painting workshops where visitors can learn directly from master artists.
• Heritage walks, film screenings, artist residencies, lectures and cultural festivals.
• A café and bookshop celebrating the history and culture of Hadoti.

A place where heritage is not just preserved, but lived every single day.

Such a model could generate livelihoods for local artisans, create tourism opportunities, and ensure that Jhala House remains financially sustainable while retaining its cultural identity.

What else would you like to see at Jhala House? Share your ideas in the comments.
