After the inauguration, I said NEVER AGAIN to Meta. The first time I bent on this was when I had to decide whether or not to download WhatsApp so I could communicate with new friends in Gaza whose internet was often difficult to access. It became obvious that in this case, a hardline boycott would be missing the forest for the trees. I’ve known for a long time now that Bluesky is just as bad as Meta but with a smaller corporate reach. They continue to facilitate genocide & silence Palestinian voices—which leads me here. For me to boycott Bluesky at this point, where I have 3 Palestinian families that rely on me to be their voice because I have a privileged skin colour and IP, would again be missing the forest for the trees. So here I am, back in Instagram for the first time in many years. I will soon be archiving all the pictures and videos of my kid then opening up my profile. Being mostly housebound with MECFS etc. nobody wants to see 100 pictures of my living room but I will be bringing over my mini book reviews from Bluesky (including the 2025 backlog) and even the occasional absurdist dream recording. But I’ll also be posting about my loved ones in the hope that my IRL friends will get to know and fall in love with them too. Not just as stranger faces in a genocide, but as whole human beings. Bearing all this in mind, I’m actually excited to be back. I’m still undecided on crossposting to facebook because it’s such a cesspit but I’m thinking about it. by @haecnicola

So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson (2015) This is a v important book, even more so today than when it was published. I grow increasingly disturbed by how our culture uses shame for dominance & control, driven by social media & traditional media. One thing Ronson doesn’t talk about (unsurprisingly) is that this is not just a corporate profit thing. It’s also a top-down social control thing. It’s not just normal ass human beings, we are operating in an environment guided by culture & authority & experts & algorithms & clicks & bot farms & insiders. Shame is the social currency used to guide us toward & away from certain areas of thought & it’s incredibly powerful. I grappled with it myself when I decided to start orienting around my own intuition & eyeballs, I had to unpack so many layers of shame around certain topics when the fog began to lift. #HaecReads by @haecnicola
