For Haejun, it all comes naturally. From the beginning, they simply liked to move. Dancing felt like the most natural thing in the world, and they never tried to hide it.

“I pretty much just did whatever I wanted to do. (Laughs.) Being honest is important to me. I’ve never once tried to turn myself into someone else.”

Waacking and voguing were styles they took up because they felt right in their body. There is an aesthetic of honesty to the way they move. They neither hold themself back nor force themself to endure, nor do they go out of their way to conform to anyone else. Because they allow themself to be seen, their movements are clear and direct; they reach out to the viewer with an openness that can be deeply moving.

“The truth is, Korea still isn’t really a place where you can be openly out. So I think when people are among themselves, with their friends, they tend to let more of that expression out through their bodies. And that can make it look all the more dramatic. In a more open society, there might not be the same need to express it so emphatically. Though, of course, I can’t generalize.”

Haejun spoke the way they dance.

“It’s only one page, but when people hear the word ‘queer,’ they might think only of gay men and lesbians. But that’s not all there is, right? I thought it would mean more if I placed myself right in the middle of it.”

Haejun is non-binary.
