Three weeks ago HÆRK was part of the second edition of The Social Life of Film, an international gathering of nomadic film platforms in Ostend. This year the gathering was organized by @monokinooostende, alongside Shhh, a festival that declares its love for silent films and the see.

We look back at four unforgettable days filled with discussions centred around the social life of film and the necessity of a more including film culture, and film screenings by @cinema_fulgor___ The Camelia Committee, Cinema Parenthése & Walden, Non-Aligned Film Archives, @monokinooostende and @anorakanorak .

Thank you @monokinooostende for having us 💙🌊

And thank you @oca_norway for the generous support. by @haerkcollective

We've just had a fantastic week in Harstad with BILDER I TRANSITT II

🟦🟦🟦

Here are some pictures from our screening event at @amiff_filmfest in @harstadkino, with a live reading of the audiovisual essay OVERLOCKED by Stacey De Voe @re___voe , followed by short film works from @elimaihn and @be_right_balcom @julieniemi and a conversation with De Voe.

The artist also distributed some gorgeously designed handouts to audience members at the screening, printed as part of the OVERLOCKED project.

During our stay in Harstad, we also featured a temporary, mobile video artotheque at @harstadbib, which was open to access by visitors and festival goers.

We'd like to extend our sincere thanks to AMIFF for their inclusion of our BILDER I TRANSITT programme as part of their festival, and to Harstad Library for their time, helpfulness and positivity. Thank you to Helene Hokland (Head of Festival - AMIFF), festival technician Knut Erik Evensen, Tor Halmstad (Head of Harstad Library), Line Rubach and Torny Nikolaisen (former Heads of Harstad Library) for their invaluable input on the art collection of Harstad kommune, the librarians and assistants at Harstad Libary, as well as all volunteers and workers at AMIFF.

In addition to this, we'd like to thank all the artists involved in our programme and video artotheque for their important works and contributions.

BILDER I TRANSITT is a travelling series of screening events and art programmes in various regions of the Nordic. The aim of the project is for us in HÆRK to create events that are thematically linked to site-specific discourses and local concerns, juxtaposed with films from different global contexts that share similar geopolitical frameworks. On another level “Bilder i transitt” is a continuous discussion and reflection about where art is presented; to make, show and discuss film/art in different contexts.
The program will evolve, change and shape itself according to the places it visits. In this way, the films, knowledges and conversations that happen in one place can overlap with others down the line.
The project is supported by @kulturradet and @koro.no. by @haerkcollective

Our programme at @amiff_filmfest is happening today! In addition to a special performance by Stacey de Voe, we're grateful for having the chance to screen two wonderful shorts:

BERRE EIN STEIN, 2023, Eli Mai Huang Nesse @elimaihn

GROWING UP ABSURD, 2023, Ben Balcom @be_right_balcom & Julie Niemi @julieniemi

BERRE EIN STEIN is a handful of anecdotes from places prone to rockslides. The film shows how locals deal with the overhanging risk of everything falling apart, and how the stones gain new purpose after tumbling down.

GROWING UP ABSURD is assembled from interviews conducted remotely with key members of the Tolstoy College community – Alex Van Oss, Peter Murphy, Chip Planck, and Paul Richmond – that speak to the ethos and history of the college, from its founding in 1969 to its dissolution in 1985. At once a sweeping portrayal of the college’s meeting places and the state of the campus today, GROWING UP ABSURD layers memories and traces of history to convey the lived experiences of its participants.

The film screening at AMIFF is part of our event in Harstad BILDER I TRANSITT II: VIDEOARTOTEKET, which includes a temporary video artotheque at Harstad Library @harstadbib, available to visit during regular opening hours this weekend. by @haerkcollective

The mobile video artotheque is now open for the rest of the week at @harstadbib! 📘📘📘 12.10.-14.10. 📘📘📘

Visitors can access a selection of shorter contributions by filmmakers and artists on the second floor. We also have a short text available about the history of public artotheque initiatives in Norwegian libraries and how we see the potential for a video artotheque within the same institutional framework.

Thank you to the filmmakers and artists contributing to the list of videos available: Ruth Aitken, Aleksander Johan Andreassen @aleksanderjohanandreassen, Ana Marques Engh @anagramster, Masahat @masahatno, Johanna Nyström @johcarin, Nour Ouayda @nouayda and Stanley Schtinter.

The mobile video artotheque is part of our event BILDER I TRANSITT II: VIDEOARTOTEKET, in collaboration with the library and @amiff_filmfest, with support from @kulturradet and @koro.no. by @haerkcollective

For our programme in conjunction with @amiff_filmfest this Friday, we've invited Malmö-based visual artist Stacey De Voe @re___voe to take part in the festival. During our film programme at @harstadkino, she will present a special live reading of the audiovisual essay 'overlocked - Around in Three Threads'. 🧵

This is part of our event BILDER I TRANSITT II: VIDEOARTOTEKET
🟦🟦🟦

The work departs from a larger ongoing research project - overlocked, which investigates nylon’s elastic imaginaries and how a seemingly innocent, yet marketed innovative thread can effectively tear through welfare politics, staging the false promise of a “one size” fits all future. Through intersections in architectures of consumer capitalism, department stores, and former sites of labor such as a former factory in Malmö, overlocked seeks to unpick the intricacies of nylon and its implications on notions of femininity, gendered labor and class politics.

STACEY DE VOE (b. 1988, New York) is a visual artist based in Malmö. Her practice takes its starting point from an interest in shared moments between cultural, lingual and temporal boundaries and how they relate to identity formation, notions of access, collective memory and the construction of herstory. Her work sews together archival material, personal accounts and fiction as a means to evoke a contemporary awareness and understanding around seemingly fixed moments on our shared timeline. In her relational practice she employs performative and spatial methods to stage speculative narratives using the archive as a way to uncover and question women’s presence and absence within public space and recorded history.

She has been a part of projects that have been presented at Malmö Konstmuseum,

BILDER I TRANSITT II: VIDEOARTOTEKET – 12.-14.10 2023 📼

This week, we’re excited to continue our BILDER I TRANSITT (Images in Transit) series in Harstad! 💥💥💥

Our next event features a cinema programme at @harstadkino , as part of @amiff_filmfest . We will also present a small video artotheque at @harstadbib , featuring shorter moving image works from various artists.

🔵🔵🔵

For our cinema programme, we’re very excited to have invited Malmö-based artist Stacey De Voe for a special live reading of her audiovisual essay OVERLOCKED – AROUND IN THREE THREADS. We will also be screening recent shorts BERRE EN STEIN (Eli Mai Huang Nesse) and GROWING UP ABSURD (Ben Balcom / Julie Niemi)

At Harstad Library, visitors can watch moving image works at a simplified, mobile video artotheque. This is inspired by the collection of artworks the library has in possession, which began with an initiative testing the potential for a public artotheque system in Norway during the 1970s. More info on the works to come!

Thank you for having us at Nordlysobservatoriet last Wednesday! 💥✨☄️

We are thrilled with how things turned out and to see so many come by for the first event in our BILDER I TRANSITT series.
Thank you to the filmmakers Kevin Jerome Everson and Fern Silva for the great works, which worked superbly well in the context of the science auditorium. Big thanks to Njål Gulbrandsen for giving a short introduction to the facilities, the research activities, and the observatory's history - not to mention, showing us some very unique historical apparatuses. And lastly, much gratitude to @kurant9000 for the collaboration and hosting their own screening event of KURANT KINO the evening before.

Much love from HÆRK 🔥
