Years of dreaming, months in the making. Big news
Austin and I finally bought our sailboat, Malua (yay, finally!)

She’s been moored in the same bay for the past 15 years, and yesterday we took her out for a sail
and wow, she sailed like a dream. The feeling of holding the tiller and realizing this is ours? Absolutely unreal.

Our boat is the Folkboat of Marieholm 26, built in Australia. She’s a full keel boat, strong, capable, and incredibly seaworthy. There’s not many of them in Sydney’s water, so we’re lucky to found one that’s now ours.

We can’t believe our dream came true so soon and I’m beyond grateful to have met my fiancé, Austin, my partner in adventure (and now in ocean crossings). Next step
 getting married!

We’ll be spending the next couple of months in the USA prepping for our maiden voyage from Australia to Malaysia, set for Australia’s spring.

A very special thank you to Howard, Malua’s devoted carer, for working with us for months, navigating time zones, and endless emails and Whatsapp calls. At first, he thought we were scammers đŸ€Ł, but in the end, he entrusted us with this beautiful boat, and we’re so grateful.

To our new Australian friends (and now honorary sailboat enthusiasts), thank you for making this trip even more meaningful. I’ll never forget the moment you hiked down from the hostel with us to the pier, sharing our joy, snapping photos and videos of us aboard Malua. I may have had something in my eye
 okay, I was definitely teary.

And finally, to those who believed in us and even to those who doubted or poked fun at our dreams, THANK YOU. Your love, support, and even your skepticism have fueled us more than you know. We proved that dreams really can set sail.

Here’s to chasing horizons, one wave at a time!

We’re not in Pittwater anymore, Gary.

We slipped out of Pittwater at 7:00 a.m., just after sunrise. As soon as we cleared the heads, we were greeted by something unforgettable
a humpback whale breaching off our port side. Austin had never seen a whale in the wild before. It breached around ten times before disappearing ahead of us, as if it had come to wish us a safe journey.

The ocean, however, had other plans.

The sea was incredibly rolly, with around 2-metre waves for much of the trip and long, towering swells unlike anything I had experienced before. For a moment, I was genuinely scared. Then, for the first time in a very long time, I got seasick. For the next ten hours, I just kept holding on, hoping I could make it through the rough conditions.

Along the way, we spotted a few more humpback whales, which made the difficult day feel all the more special.

How did Gary do in rolly sea? He absolutely nailed his first passage. While we were bouncing around outside, he slept for nearly nine hours straight.

Just before sunset, at around 5:05 p.m., we arrived safely in Newcastle, our very first port away from Pittwater.

Waiting for us was our new friend, Braden, who kindly came out to photograph and film our arrival. Braden also owns a Folkboat built by the same maker as Malua, so it felt like an instant connection. It’s funny how a shared love for these little boats can create friendships so quickly. taken in Australia by @hahahadhinah

Choosing a different path doesn’t always make sense to everyone.

This wasn’t about leaving a country. It was about choosing a life that feels like our own. We didn’t want our dreams to stay as dreams.

We hope this reminds someone that it’s okay to build a life that’s a little different from what society expects of you
a life that genuinely makes you happy.

If you’d like to follow our journey beyond Instagram, we’ve been documenting it at SailingMalua.com.

If you see us along the way from New South Wales, Australia throughout Indonesia, all the way to Port Klang, Malaysia for the next 6 months, please say hi! Gary also would love to meet his fans!

Fair winds,

Hadhinah, Austin, Gary aboard SV Malua

July, in no particular order. It’s Gary’s world. We’re just living in it.

We missed another weather window. But honestly? It was so short that forcing it would’ve been a bad call. Winter down here in southern NSW has been absolutely wild, and the ocean has been making the decisions, not us.

The good news is our stay in Australia was legally extended for another three months. That gives us a little more breathing room before we eventually check out of Australia and sail for Indonesia, if everything goes to plan. Sailing has a funny way of reminding you that plans are more like suggestions.

The engine still likes to keep us humble. A little issue here, another one there. Thankfully, nothing major at the moment. That’s exactly why we’ve been out doing sea trials instead of rushing off. Every trip teaches us something, and every little breakdown is one less surprise we’d rather not have offshore.

In the meantime, we’ve been using this unexpected pause to slow down, decompress, and wait for the last few bits of gear we still need before we leave. I used to hate the waiting. Now I’m learning that sometimes waiting is part of the voyage too.

“Maybe Malua wasn’t the only one who needed to be ready before we left. Maybe every failed weather window, every sea trial, every problem the engine threw at us, and every extra day we spent waiting was preparing us too.

We thought the journey would begin when we finally sailed away.

We were wrong.

It already has.”

No engine, no sails, no weather routing
just going wherever the current takes it. Maybe we’ve been overcomplicating this sailing life. 😭đŸȘŒâ›” But then again, we’re not jellyfish. 😂

Day 2 of shakedown sailing. Grateful for this sunny weather. Jelly blubbers are out floating. It will be a rainy week again starting tomorrow.

Just a Gary appreciation post.

Gary is not a ship’s cat in the romantic, storybook sense. He is not standing at the bow, ears back, wind in his whiskers. He is simply a cat who happens to live on a boat, sailing from Australia to Malaysia, completely unimpressed by the enormity of either of those facts. We are doing everything at once and Gary, to his credit, is keeping up.

We find this very comforting.

The Pittwater will forever be a home for you, this depiction of lions island is a painting that I made for a powerhouse couple I met a few months ago, Austin and Hadhinah, they’re just about to sail up the coast of Australia stopping along the way before making a big voyage to Malaysia!

It was incredible hearing their story on having this dream that they’re both living right now, from flying out to Australia for only week to buy a little sailboat here in the Pittwater to then finally returning back here a year later in February to start working on « Malua » and getting her ready for the voyage. Completely living the sailing life by living on Scotland island and rowing into mainland to get parts to continue working on the sailboat for months for the time to finally come for them to start their voyage.

It was very rewarding being able to see how incredibly grateful they are and very sincerely gobsmacked about how beautiful this little part of the world is, from hearing Austin talk about growing up in the desert of Vegas to then be sailing here in the waters of the Pittwater, and Hadhinah coming from Malaysia, traveling all of America to then meet Austin in Vegas where they started this dream together is super beautiful 💛 very cool connection indeed

Oh and they also bought a little cat named Gary to join them on their journey! Gary’s overly confident and will be taking on the role of being the captain of this vessel Malua

Bon voyage @heymatsaleh @hahahadhinah I look forward to following along on your sail here on solid ground by @hahahadhinah
