“Conscious Confinement”
So so grateful I had the opportunity to choreograph on this group of beautiful dancers with @dancensemblebyu ! We had so much fun creating and learning from each other this past semester!! Video coming soon 🎥

We learned early
how to fold ourselves,
crease the loud parts inward,
iron out the strange.

Stand in line.
Mirror what survives socially.
Our hands hover at the seams
afraid of what spills out.

So I synchronize
breath measured,
eyes forward,
judgement passing between us
like a quiet current.

There is a pulse in my chest,
wanting to break out,
wanting to be different.

But fear is a careful sculptor.
It shapes us into sameness,
calls it safety,
calls it belonging.

Even still,
while some move forward,
others refuse.
