This week I learned a lot about ankle monitors: they can overheat, lose battery energy, and cause rashes. I also learned that part of why Salvadorans got a TPS extension is because the White House realized that without their labor the ballroom wouldn’t get done. A Haitian Amazon worker after losing her job whereby she was getting paid $30/hr had to go underground and accept an hourly pay of $15/hr. This is what is taking place today. See you on Sunday! by @haitiharlem

See you this Sunday at 2PM at 125th and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. There are too many names to state right now, but we must acknowledge that we are all being impacted by the federal government in troubling ways. #pierredamasbel #nolanwells #ice #fightback taken in Harlem by @haitiharlem

Stand up for Pierre Damas Bel. WE DEMAND JUSTICE! WE WILL NOT STAY SILENT! See you this Sunday October 4th, 2026 at 2:00PM in front of the Adam Clayton Powell Statue on 125th street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. We will remember, grieve, educate, rally, canvass, and organize to support the family and advocate for the banning of ankle monitors. We will also discuss the federal government’s efforts to destabilize ICE movement work like the MN15 who helped shake Minnesota. We will call the names of ALL people that have been killed by ICE (the list keeps growing). Thank you to all of our supporters from New York to Ohio to California. If you cannot be there please donate to the family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/pierre-damas-bels-family-needs-care-after-his-loss. #jistispoupierredamasbel #noupapbliyepierre #springfieldohio #bantheanklemonitors by @haitiharlem

This is my first banner. I sketched the letters with pen ink, painted it, and figured out how to incorporate flowers and leaves to honor a soft soul that was stripped of his dignity. I am grateful that people are coming together to help me out with this. We are all Harlem organizers demanding a better world. We see solidarity as a tool for change. The family wants two things: 1) A total ban on ankle monitors 2) Resources for a proper funeral, legal affairs, and etc. Their peace of mind has been stripped from them because of xenophobia, lies, ignorance, hate, racism, confusion, and a lack of support. The gofundme link is easy to find (Unfortunately I had to report a scammer’s account who posed as the family). The proper link is below. Slide two is the picture of Pierre that will be laminated and ready for Sunday. https://www.gofundme.com/f/pierre-damas-bels-family-needs-care-after-his-loss #pierredamasbel #harlem #vigil #haiti #bananklemonitors by @haitiharlem

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7 | OPENING NIGHT 6pm
Domsey on Strike + The Ones Who Bought Bushwick

The City College of New York
Join us as we open the 4th Annual NOU Film Festival with two Brooklyn stories examining labor, gentrification, displacement, and community resistance.

Domsey on Strike (Domsey an Grèv) documents the historic 1989–1992 struggle of predominantly Haitian immigrant workers at Brooklyn’s Domsey International, who organized against wage theft, racism, harassment, and abusive working conditions.

The Ones Who Bought Bushwick, created by young filmmakers from Educational Video Center, examines gentrification and displacement in Bushwick and asks a question that continues to resonate across New York City: Who gets to shape a neighborhood—and who gets to remain?

Together, the films connect generations of Brooklyn history while showing the importance of communities documenting and preserving their own stories.

6:00 PM | Opening Reception
Generously sponsored by the Black Studies Department at The City College of New York

Screening followed by Q&A with participating filmmakers and archivist & artist Ayanna Legros.

Come open NOU 2026 with us for an evening of film, community, memory, and conversation.

Reserve Tickets: www.dominicanslovehaitians.com

FROM THE ARCHIVES!!

Domsey on Strike (Domsey an Grèv) takes us inside the historic 1989–1992 labor struggle at Brooklyn’s Domsey International, where predominantly Haitian immigrant workers organized against wage theft, racism, harassment, and abusive working conditions. Preserved through footage filmed during the struggle, the documentary is both a record of immigrant worker resistance and a reminder of archives' importance in keeping community histories alive.

October 4th at 2PM we are hosting a vigil for Pierre Damas Bel at 125th and Adam Clayton Boulevard. Ohio community members are asking for the ankle monitor system to be banned because this pain and shame is what caused Pierre to make a decision to cope with the anxiety, pain, and humiliation he had to endure. We stand in solidarity with everyone. We demand the suffocating mistreatment of black immigrants in the US. We stand with those that were brave enough in Minnesota to rock this country and demand change. ##justiceforpierredamasbel #harlem #abolishice #bantheanklemonitors haitiandiaspora by @haitiharlem

These are the other two sides of Drew Dixon’s bottle. Look Back Window 🪟 = an abuse lookback window is a temporary law that pauses or lifts expired statutes of limitations, allowing survivors to file civil lawsuits for abuse that happened years or decades earlier. Thousands of lawsuits were filed. Dixon has roots in Washington, D.C., New York, California, and Massachusetts. #fragileawakeningparttwo #bottleart #drewdixon #newyorksurvivorsact by @haitiharlem
