My (now “our”) Nephew, Garrett Mukai, one of several Nephews chosen to walk Pascale “down the aisle”, represents Ground Zero of Pascale and my relationship.
.
Garrett Mukai, born and raised in Hilo, Hawai’i, is the Proprietor of the @ShakaShakaTiki bar in Brooklyn, New York.
.
Garrett’s bar had been opened about 90-days back in March 2019, when I met Pascale. His Mom invited me to come up from Baltimore to meet her and Garrett’s sister, @Jaciechang_, both of whom still reside in Hilo, to celebrate the bar’s milestone.
.
On the second night of that visit an unexpected snowstorm began. The photographer gene in me forced me out into the storm to capture a few moments of Brooklyn in the snow.
.
Since the snowstorm was unexpected I was not dressed properly. Not naked, mind you, but certainly not dressed for what turned out to be a heavy and wet snowfall.
.
Becoming increasingly and uncomfortably wet, and in a pre-COVID New York City—the city that never sleeps—I quickly began the quest for a place to duck into to escape the weather and dry-off until the storm passed.
.
The closest place to me at that moment was Kombit Bar & Restaurant (@KombitBar) on Flatbush Avenue, about .2 miles from ShakaShakaTiki (which is equidistant the opposite direction from the Barclays Center.)
.
Kombit’s Haitian-blue sign was illuminated and through the window I saw a couple heads bobbin’ about.
.
The two heads turned out to be Pascale and her sister, Maryse, who were busily cleaning up the restaurant after a large event which had occurred earlier in the evening.
.
Having quickly learned they were not patrons but instead associated with the restaurant, with one of them sportin’ a broom, I apologized for interrupting and turned to walk out when one or both encouraged me to stay and take a seat at the bar. I later learned they were the Proprietors of Kombit Bar & Restaurant.
.
Some 4.3 years later, this wedding thing happened.
.

Our first appearance as Husband and Wife into the wedding reception crowd of ~200 people brought with it two songs;
.
1- The Introduction:
“Take On Me” by a-ha
.
2- The First Dance:
“Take On Me” by a-ha
.
No, I did not stutter.
.
The first was the original up-tempo version from 1985.
The second was the beautifully mellow MTV Unplugged version from 2017.
.
Tim Grierson of MelMagazine. com writes; “‘Take On Me’ is the story of a guy speaking to his true love. But there seems to be an obstacle between them — apparently, they don’t have much time left together — but the singer wants to make the moments they have last.” . On the day we met, March 3, 2019, there was no “true love” involved, but we most certainly quickly came to know we wanted to spend more time together.
.
Having been in Brooklyn for just 2 days, with plans to leave 2 days later, on that first (snowy) night together in Kombit Restaurant I shared the 2017 version of the song with Pascale.
.
The reason for sharing was my memory of one simple lyric from the song:
.
“I’ll be gone
In a day or two.”
.
It was quite fun and a bit of a challenge explaining to our Wedding Planner, Pascale’s Sisters, and DJ @tonibeatz , that we wanted to play Take On Me for both our intro AND first dance.
.
The idea to use the song for both was all Pascale’s. 💕💃🏽 . The last 2 photos here were taken on March 3, 2019. The 1st being the last photo I took before meeting Pascale, a selfie of me standing in the middle of the street (Prospect Place) where my AirBNB was located, and the very first photo of the 2 of us taken some hours later outside Kombit by one of Pascale’s friends.
