Three years ago, singer Annette de Rozario asked me to write a song for her based on Walt Whitman’s poem O Captain! My Captain!. At the time, I didn’t know it was such a famous poem. I was simply touched by the beauty of the words.

I composed the music at my parents house, while my father was downstairs watching television. At some point, it became very emotional when I suddenly realized that I was writing the music for his funeral.

One year later, on August 13, 2024, my father died.
We played a demo recording of the song at his funeral, just as I somehow already knew we would when I was writing it.

This year, I finally found the time to return to the song. I made a new arrangement for voice, piano, accordion and cello, and together we recorded it properly.

Today, exactly two years after my father’s death, Captain my Captain is released on all streaming platforms, in memory of my father.

Today we played the final performance of West Side Story in Eindhoven.

I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to be part of this production. It was definitely a bucket-list experience, and for almost a year it has been the main musical project in my life.

Thank you to everyone involved. It was a pleasure to work with such talented and lovely people. I'll miss you all! taken in Parktheater Eindhoven by @hajosan
