🇫🇷 Depuis belle lurette, quand on me demande « Qu’est-ce que tu fais dans la vie ? », je ne sais pas quoi répondre. Je bugge. Pudeur, flemme, je ne sais pas trop. Alors je réponds « je peins… ».
J’ai eu la chance de rencontrer Sarah et son équipe. Ils se sont intéressés à mon travail, véritablement. Et après moultes discussions, on en arrive à un petit reportage d’une vingtaine de minutes sur qui je suis, mon travail, une partie de mon histoire. C’est certes synthétique et assez juste. Je te remercie donc encore ici Sarah, mais aussi Margaux, Valentin (et le Bro’ évidemment), Babs, Hamou et tous ceux qui ont contribué de près ou de loin à la réalisation de ce document. Poser tout ça est une petite victoire pour moi.

🇬🇧 For a long time now, whenever someone asks me “What do you do for a living?”, I don’t really know what to say. I freeze. Modesty, laziness… I’m not sure. So I just answer, “I paint…”

I had the chance to meet Sarah and her team. They took a real interest in my work. And after many conversations, it led to a short documentary of about twenty minutes about who I am, my work, and part of my story. It’s obviously condensed, but quite accurate. So I want to thank you again here, Sarah, but also Margaux, Valentin (and Bro’, of course), Babs, Hamou, and everyone who contributed, directly or indirectly, to making this piece happen. Putting all of this into words and images feels like a small victory for me.

🤓 Lets’ talk about Estevanico (with Thamud)

Connaissiez-vous l’histoire fascinante de cet explorateur, Estevanico Mustafa Zemmouri ?
Un homme dont le destin semble tout droit sorti d’un roman d’aventure…

Originaire d’Afrique du Nord, il traverse l’Atlantique au XVIᵉ siècle et devient l’un des premiers Africains à explorer une partie de l’actuel territoire américain.

Mais son histoire ne s’arrête pas là…

Esclave, explorateur, interprète, guide : Estevanico a traversé des territoires inconnus, survécu à des épreuves incroyables et marqué l’histoire des explorations espagnoles.

Et pourtant, son nom reste largement méconnu.

BEIJING - DAY 2

My second day in the streets of the Chinese capital. The first sketch was chosen live on Instagram with you, and for the rest, I just went with the vibe. Thanks to everyone I met along the way during these sessions. Videos coming soon ✌🏾

BEIJING - DAY 1

Aéroport de Moroni, paré au top direction Beijing, p’tit selfie avec un ancien p’tit frère qui est devenu manager 💪🏾.
18 heures de voyages, mon voisin ronfle, impossible de dormir. J’arrive enfin dans la capitale chinoise accueilli par Hamidou de l’ambassade, j’installe Alipay et DiDi et je saute dans un taxi déterminé comme jamais à explorer la ville.
J’fouine, j’fouille les rues et tombe sur mon nouveau pote Beekay. J’le laisse et j’saute dans le métro pékinois, j’m’y sens comme à Paname merci à Apple Map et Chat GPT. Je déambule dans la ville, du gros son sur les oreilles, je chantonne en confiance, convaincu que je suis chez moi partout sur cette planète. J’trouve un quartier qui a la bonne énergie, tout m’inspire : les grosses typos, les gens, les scooters, je suis en chasse pour mon premier sketchs.
J’trouve le spot, j’demarre. Une vieille me sourit et blague avec moi. Ca sent bon. J’ai la dalle, j’vais croquer cette ville j’crois, comme un gros grec au 129 de Saint Denis, les doigts couverts de peinture, 20 ans en arrière ✌🏾.

18 hours of travel. Dude next to me is snoring, no way I’m getting any sleep. I finally land in the Chinese capital, Hamidou from the embassy is there to welcome me. I set up Alipay and DiDi, jump in a cab, more determined than ever to explore the city.

I dig around, roam the streets, and run into my new homie Beekay. I leave him and jump on the Beijing subway — feels just like Paname, shoutout to Apple Maps and ChatGPT. I wander through the city with some heavy sounds blasting in my headphones, humming along like I own the place, convinced I’m at home anywhere on this planet.

I find a neighborhood with the right energy. Everything inspires me: the huge typography, the people, the scooters. I’m on the hunt for my first sketch.

I find the spot and get started. An old lady smiles at me and jokes around. Feels right.

I’m starving. Think I’m about to devour this city like a massive kebab back at 129 Saint-Denis, fingers covered in paint, just like 20 years ago ✌🏾. taken in 北京市（Beijing, China） by @hakim.idriss

Even with a lot of projects going on, I always try to make time for my own research. Just painting, with no brief and no destination.

I felt like painting another female portrait. Yellow background, thick paint, a few more brushstrokes than usual… and once again, chasing that expression that’s hard to put into words. Somewhere between strength, pride and something more fragile.

Même au milieu de plusieurs projets, j’essaie toujours de garder du temps pour mes recherches personnelles. Juste peindre, sans brief et sans destination.

J’avais envie de refaire un portrait féminin. Un fond jaune, plus de matière, un peu plus de pinceau que d’habitude… et encore cette envie de chercher une expression difficile à définir. There’s one thing about the contemporary art world that will probably always make me uncomfortable: the need to intellectualize everything, to put the concept above everything else, and to seek validation from the insiders. That’s just not where I come from. I grew up with instinctive painting, with play, with the simple joy of making. Just a suspended moment where I’m alive… and I paint. Most of the time, simply because I enjoy it. Maybe that’s just my way of existing. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Y’a un truc qui me mettra toujours mal à l’aise avec leur monde de l’art contemporain, c’est le fait de vouloir toujours tout intellectualiser, tout miser sur le concept et la validation de l’entre-soi. Je ne suis pas de là, je me suis construit sur une peinture instinctive, le plaisir, le jeu. Juste un moment suspendu, je suis en vie, je peins. Souvent juste pour le plaisir, sans aucune raison. I’ve noticed there’s one thing that almost always tells me whether a painting works.

Take this one, for example. It’s almost finished. I was alone in the elevator with this 100 × 100 cm canvas… and for some reason, it genuinely felt like there were two of us. (The elevator video is at the end of the carousel.)

The real test, though, is time.

If it still speaks to me in a week, a month, or ten years… then I’ll know I touched something real.

See you in 10 years. 😁✌🏾

J’ai remarqué qu’il y a un truc qui marche presque à tous les coups pour savoir si une œuvre fonctionne.

Par exemple celle-ci, qui est quasiment terminée. Je prenais l’ascenseur, seul, avec cette toile de 100 × 100 cm… et sans vraiment savoir pourquoi, j’avais l’impression qu’on était deux. (La vidéo dans l’ascenseur est à la fin du carrousel.)

La vraie confirmation, c’est le temps.

Si elle me parle autant dans une semaine, un mois ou dix ans… c’est que j’aurai touché quelque chose.

You have to know how to honor your own people. Especially when they’re beautiful, honest, and courageous. We’ve shared great moments, and others that were more difficult. We were students, then became parents. We’ve lived through similar experiences, and faced our share of challenges too. Today, I wanted to paint one of the faces that truly means something to me. Congratulations on the woman you’ve become, @co_priceless , on your journey, your wonderful family, and happy birthday 😉 #thefightcontinues 💪🏾✌🏾

Faut savoir honorer les siens. Surtout quand ils sont beaux, honnêtes et courageux. On a partagé des bons moments, d’autres moins. On a été étudiants, puis parents, on a vécu des expériences similaires, des épreuves aussi. Aujourd’hui j’ai voulu peindre un des visages qui a du sens pour moi. These days, I’m dedicating a big part of my creative energy to my book.
(By the way, it’s coming along really well… I’ll share more about it very soon.)

But I also make sure to keep time for painting. Just painting.

No commission. No specific goal. No pressure to create a finished piece.

I start with a face that inspires me, grab my palette knife, a little acrylic paint… and let the painting take me wherever it wants.

It always feels good. 💪🏾

En ce moment, je consacre une grande partie de mon énergie créative à mon livre.
(D’ailleurs, ça avance bien… je vous en parlerai très bientôt.)

Mais je tiens aussi à préserver du temps pour peindre. Juste pour peindre.

Sans commande. Sans objectif particulier. Sans chercher à produire une œuvre.

Je pars d’un visage qui m’inspire, je prends mon couteau, un peu d’acrylique… et je laisse la peinture m’emmener là où elle veut.
