E R Y K A H B A D U. Thank you for taking us back to 1997 and also somewhere in the far far future. Thank you for immersing us in a whole living surreal ecosystem built with sea creatures, glass, beds, conversation pits, projections, bodies, voices, memory, future, retro, underwater, uterine, extraterrestrial, human baduizm.

Still dreaming of her neo soul nostalgia, hip hop, theater, psychedelic art, witchcraft, and whatever beautiful Badu metaphysics were happening up there. Wow. cycles, transition, bodies, birth, death. becoming. We were in it. 🪼🌀🛏️✨

👀 Tonight 6-7:30MT! Please register at the link in our bio for our free, virtual panel discussion with an incredible group of artists from our current exhibition @theprojects_space in Tucson, Haunting Space / Holding Legacy. Tonight’s talk will be moderated by co-curator Béalleka Makau and welcomes Hakim Bellamy, Claire A. Warden and Paula Wilson.

Moderator + Co-curator: Béalleka Makau
Kenyan-born, California-raised, Béalleka Makau is a queer Black feminist recovering academic-turned-lyrical essayist and storyteller. She earned her Ph.D. in postcolonial literature and theory from UT-Austin in 2005 and was a tenure-track professor of African and African American Literature, South Asian Diasporic Literature, American Studies, and Gender & Women’s Studies at Colgate, Michigan State, and Willamette Universities until 2015.

Based in Taos since 2018, Béalleka writes about and coaches teams and individuals to unlearn divisive stories about identity and power; cultivate empathy and connection, and get free using REDE (Radical Empathy Disrupts Entitlement, “ready”) a curriculum she originated in 2017. She is fascinated by how the stories we are told—and those we create—shape and justify categorical exclusions, and how we might realize our unified whole for the sake of our interdependent future.

A former Toni Morrison scholar and passionate reader of Octavia E. Butler’s fiction for nearly 40 years, Béalleka’s writing has most recently appeared on Medium, been published in Bacopa Literary Review, and shared in numerous storytelling performances on both U.S. coasts. She is currently completing a memoir, Peculiar Intimacies: Incidents in the Life of a Recovering Blackademic, about her indigenous Kenyan/German-American ancestry; psychedelic and geographic excursions; self-emancipation from academia; and development of embodied, liberatory curricula.

Hakim Bellamy @hakimbe is a poet, writer, performer, and former inaugural Poet Laureate of Albuquerque whose work is rooted in language, history, community, and radical imagination.

Hakim first found his way to poetry through hip hop and has spent more than two decades writing, performing, teaching, and creating work that gives language to the people, places, and histories that shape us.

“I create to not forget. I create to imagine more evolved futures. I create to survive. I create to sustain the communities that represent. I create to resist. I create to cultivate.”

That sense of purpose has remained constant even as Hakim's life and creative practice have continued to evolve. After completing law school and becoming a practicing attorney, he is finding a different kind of structure around his art and asking new questions about what he wants to create.

Right now, that includes developing his third collection of poems and exploring a project centered on the history of Negro Motorist Green Book locations in New Mexico.

We're grateful for Hakim, and for the wit, nuance, energy, and generous spirit he brings to this community and are excited to welcome him as an Artist in Residence with our Julian cohort.
