I am free.
I am a survivor.

Today, I had the opportunity to speak for the second time against my perpetrator—the person I once believed was supposed to be a loving, caring, protective, and supportive father figure in my life.

This time, I left everything on the table. I walked out of that courtroom knowing I had said every word that needed to be said, with no regrets and nothing left unsaid.

The first time I stood in that courtroom, I truly believed his sentencing would be the end of this chapter. I thought I could finally begin my healing journey and start moving forward. But it wasn’t the end.

Even though he pleaded guilty and accepted a plea deal, the decisions made within the court system brought us back to that courtroom for a second time. From the beginning, my detective stated that he deserved the maximum sentence. I have always believed that, and I still do.

But this time was different.

This time, I stood there with no words left inside of me that needed to be spoken. I gave my victim impact statement. I told my truth. I said everything I needed to say.

And now, I am praying to God that no one will ever silence me again.

I cannot change what happened to me. But I can choose what happens next.

I am free.
I am a survivor.
I am an SA survivor.

And I will continue to use my voice. 🩵
