I lingered in Kyoto a little longer, for one last stop at a yarn shop stumbled upon the night before. Morning air crisp, my sweet friend Kate n’ I stood outside, the shutters still drawn, waiting. Approaching us, another early visitor: a quiet woman with a kind smile, hands in mittens and covered in quilt. Yūka Toshida.

Conversation came in fragments (gestures & smiles)—haltingly, eagerly—Google translate bridging the gaps. I pointed to her hat, a beautiful knit, and asked if she’d knit it herself—admiring the delicate stitches. She nodded, then gestured down at her coat, her pants, even the delicate blue sea glass earrings catching the early light. “All of it” she said, smiling.

Passion needs no translation. Threading strangers into something familiar, love & excitement. There on a quiet Kyoto street strangers wove together for a moment, connected by the love of making. She was so excited to pose for me when I asked to take her photo, so sweet and shy but so her own. Wrapped in the warmth of her own creation. 🪡🧵
