The makers of the mirror. 🔥👯‍♀️

Hello from our friends @halfroundbastard
and @vivian_beer, reflected in their collaborative mirror, “Admire Yourself in Flowers and Lace,” at the #PenlandBenefitAuction exhibition. 👯🥳

Made from forged and fabricated steel, the piece brings together two giants of Penland’s iron program and their very different approaches to the material.

Elizabeth and Vivian made the mirror during a month-long residency at Shop Space in Raleigh.

“Through days of experimentation, we made every part together,” Vivian said.

Both are longtime friends and educators at Penland. The Benefit Auction is always a bit of a homecoming, bringing artists, students, teachers, and friends back to the mountain.

We’re so glad to have Elizabeth and Vivian here—and to see them with the finished piece.

We’re sharing up-close views of beautiful craft objects from this year’s auction. More soon. ❤️

Another of our favorite movies at @filmland is @e.vincentmartinez’s IRON PEARLS, a portrait of his longtime friend, Elizabeth Brim - a brilliant blacksmith who forges feminine objects with hammers, metal and fire. LINK IN BIO for our interview. #filmland #art #blacksmithing by @halfroundbastard

⚒️ 20 years of @fire_on_the_mountain_sp!

Every year in downtown Spruce Pine, artists, makers, blacksmithing nerds, and curious visitors gather for one of the most authentic craft festivals around—a celebration of fire, metal, and the ancient art of blacksmithing.

This year’s festival (which is co-sponsored by Penland) featured renowned blacksmith Elizabeth Brim (@halfroundbastard), whose iconic serviceberry tree surrounds the town clock with ever-blooming white flowers.

Live demonstrations included:

⚒️ Vu Nguyen — handcrafted culinary tools and barware forging
⚒️ John Winer — improvisational forged forms exploring movement and line
⚒️ Elizabeth Belz — contemporary finishing techniques, waxes, paints, and patinas
⚒️ Kat Cole — vitreous enamel on steel
⚒️ Andrew Meers — chasing and repoussé techniques in sheet metal

Thank you to the Town of Spruce Pine, Toe River Arts, Arthur Morgan School, local smiths, demonstrators, volunteers, our Penland team and everyone who came out to celebrate craft, community, and the enduring magic of working with fire and steel. 💚
