Friday was World Water Day and this has us reflecting on how lucky we are @haliburton_forest to have access to over 100 pristine lakes where we can swim, fish, and paddle. With 400 creeks, ponds and wetlands that provide important habitat for all critters within the forest all within this 100,000 acres/40,468 hectare forest.

Since time immemorial the Anishinaabe have been the stewards of this land and now we share in that responsibility for sustainability, conservation, and land stewardship.

Sitting atop the Algonquin dome there are three different watersheds at Haliburton Forest.The Pelaw River which is a major outflow, draining approximately 20,000 acres of water.
This watershed is part of the Gull River – Kennisis watershed which is a component of the larger Trent-Severn watershed. The second of which in the northwest, Kawagama which flows into the Muskoka watershed, and the third to the east where water flows into the Madawaska watershed.

So you can see that it is of the utmost importance that we protect our waterways to the fullest extent. This can take many forms such as cleaning our boats, and vehicles to eliminate any chances for invasive species. Keeping the water access areas, campsites clean and tidy. Encourage the growth and protection of natural shorelines. And so much more.

Do you have a home for this chair? Southern Ontario friends (or those willing to drive), we are looking for a new home for the Beech Thicket Lounge Chair made by hand by students in one of my design build courses with beech wood from @haliburton_forest.

It’s comfy, durable and a truly unique form shaped by the specific bends of a tree. Designed and made by @sophia_deuria and @dara_abukhajil alongside myself and the whole @workshop.daniels team.

Priority will be given to non-profits or other publicly accessible spaces that can host it, but if you’d like it for your home please do still reach out!

About this past Friday!

I love sharing the outdoors with family and friends but there is something to be said about solo adventures. Solo adventures foster self reliance and confidence. Solo adventures where you aren't worried about others needs, wants, agenda and feelings. Solo adventures where you don't talk all day (other than the voices in your head 😅🙃), and are so quiet you witness things you'd never see with others.

Beavers chatting in their lodge, a Great Blue Heron nonchalantly walking through a marsh snacking on minnows, frogs and whatever else, while you eat your lunch. Just to have another heron escort you through the creek to the lake. 🥰

You have a conversation with the Ravens, the crickets are defining and the Bald Eagle (keeper of the lake, see it every year) scares the crap out of you and some ducks! To be fare we startled eachother. And a noble Kingfisher sitting upon its rocky thrown!

The breeze through the shrubs makes you feel embrassed, keeping things cool, and the Blue Jays, jay, jolts you out of your head. Rounded out with a Barred Owl, nuthatches, chickadees, wood packers, robins, etc. Maybe even a Sasquatch knock! 😱😯

I didn't get enough of this, this summer and it shows, but am I ever glad I forced myself out today.

What a glorious day. I'm gonna miss this place. One of my favourite paddles @haliburton_forest

The leaves are changing daily, if not hourly! We have a good mix of reds, oranges and yellows, mixed with green!

@hurtininhaliburton this weekend! Competitors/gravel bikers will be competing to see who can do the most laps of East Road, Dutton Road and North Road in 8 hours! You can expect delays on all these roads this weekend. Cyclists have right of way.

@tegsadventure was offsight today volunteering with @haliburtonlandtrust at their new Beaver Creek trail assisting to help build a boardwalk. This trail will be beautiful once done and an incredible place for wildlife viewing!
