FILM MEANS BUSINESS. 🎬 ✍️

A personal first for me: I’ve officially penned my first featured article for the Halifax Chamber of Commerce’s Business Voice, the Chamber’s official business magazine.

My article, “Film Means Business: Why Nova Scotia’s screen industry is economic infrastructure,” makes a simple but important argument:

Film is not only culture. It is economic infrastructure.

Every production supports far more than what happens in front of the camera.

It supports hotels, restaurants, caterers, transportation companies, construction, skilled trades, accounting, legal services, equipment rentals, local suppliers, creative workers and small businesses.

But the bigger opportunity for Nova Scotia goes beyond attracting productions from elsewhere.

It is about building the talent, companies, infrastructure and investment environment that allow more stories — and more intellectual property — to originate here, be owned here and travel around the world from here.

Nova Scotia already has the landscapes, architecture, communities, artists and stories.

Now we have to keep building the capacity around them.

The Business Voice digital magazine enjoys a wide reach through the Chamber’s website, e-bulletin and social media platforms. The estimated monthly readership for the publication is 100,000 across all communication channels combined.

It was also wonderful seeing myself featured in the September/October Newsmakers section of Business Voice alongside my good friends and colleagues Prince Churchill of Art By Prince and Bria Miller of Bria Makes Things.

My feature highlights my upcoming documentary on one of the most consequential lieutenant governors in Nova Scotia’s history.

Prince and Bria are featured for their work creating an artistic mural for Nourish Nova Scotia, exploring the connections between food, climate, community and growth.

From receiving my first Human Rights Award in Nova Scotia to standing inside Canada’s national museum dedicated to human rights. What a FULL-CIRCLE moment! 🇨🇦

During my trip to Winnipeg for the National Black Canadian Summit, I visited the Canadian Museum for Human Rights for the very first time.

In December 2025, I was honoured to receive the Dr. Burnley Allan “Rocky” Jones Award from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

Walking through the museum, one powerful statement immediately stopped me in my tracks:

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

I then explored At the Knees of Our Ancestors, a remarkable permanent exhibition curated by Alia Aluma, whom I had the pleasure of connecting with earlier this year.

Seeing Carrie Best, Africville, and African Nova Scotian history represented on a national stage, thousands of kilometres from home, was incredibly meaningful.
But the surprises didn’t stop there!
I unexpectedly encountered two familiar faces: Viola Desmond and The Honourable Dr. Mayann Francis!

Through Anderson Films, I’m currently producing a documentary about Dr. Francis, Nova Scotia’s first African Nova Scotian Lieutenant Governor, who granted Viola Desmond a historic posthumous free pardon in 2010.

To find myself standing in front of their stories while actively bringing that very history to the screen was a moment I’ll never forget.

And just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, I bumped into my good friend Senator Tony Ince in the museum gift shop while buying my new human rights T-shirt! 😂

Another unexpected connection to home!
My biggest takeaway?

Our stories belong in our national institutions. Our histories deserve to be preserved. And the responsibility to advance human dignity belongs to every generation.

From Nova Scotia to Manitoba, this weekend reminded me exactly why I do this work.

And why I’m just getting started.

A pleasure meeting historical researcher and documentary filmmaker Thomas Lynskey (@thetominator2) tonight at Government House in Downtown Halifax.

Through his work with HFX Studios and the Part-Time Explorer YouTube channel, Thomas has amassed millions of views by uncovering fascinating pieces of history and heritage — bringing stories of shipwrecks, maritime history, forgotten communities, exploration, and the people behind them to audiences around the world.

Tonight, Thomas took us through some of the remarkable stories hidden along Nova Scotia’s coastline and shared how research, exploration, filmmaking, and collaboration with local communities can bring history back to life.

As a filmmaker who deeply values the preservation and sharing of our histories, it was a pleasure listening to Thomas deliver his keynote address this evening and hearing about his approach to historical storytelling.

I’m looking forward to diving deeper into his work, exploring more of the histories he has uncovered, and continuing to learn through his content.

A great evening celebrating history, heritage, exploration, and filmmaking at one of Nova Scotia’s most historic spaces.

This session explores the power of culture, art, and storytelling in shaping identity, preserving memory, and strengthening belonging. Through conversations on creative expression, participants will explore its role as a force for resistance, cultural affirmation, and the reimagining of Black youth narratives.
