This young girl attends a small madrasa in a village adjacent to a village we have visited dozens of times. Recently her headmaster took it upon himself to build a madrasa and mosque on his own land, and invite families to send their children to his school. The families in this region lack trust in the government/private schools but have total trust in the mosque and the madrasa. After seeing our work with the five madrasas in his region, he invited us to his school and asked us for possible support regarding his own. His daughter is this young girl's best friend, as they're always together. When his daughter goes home to bring us tea or a meal, this young girl goes with her as well. Her confidence is something to witness, as she is totally comfortable with our presence. We hope to include her school in our circle and invite those interested in this work to help support her headmaster. I believe all of us would be surprised regarding the budget and how all of us can make a difference so easily. Anyone interested do send me a message and we'll make it happen in 2027.

Her portrait was made this past January in the new classroom at her school. She has an incredible ability to keep her eyes open even under the bright sunlight. In this image the sun is coming through the window to her left, as we visited her school in the afternoon. We were lucky enough to have afternoons for her school, since the mornings were generally foggy during my visit. Her school is a traditional madrasa, offering Koranic studies as well as Arabic and Urdu lessons. In addition, the headmaster has hired three teachers to present the government curriculum as well to his students, as the majority of them do not attend neither government nor private schools. We continue to support the headmaster in this endeavor, and hope that in 2027 the school's status is recognized by the government as well.

Habíamos colaborado durante años antes de esta sesión, pero estar en este espacio se sintió como algo nuevo para mí. Este año no pudimos utilizar la escuela, por lo que contar con un lugar tan seguro para fotografiar resultó invaluable. Por supuesto, tanto las bailarinas como sus familias percibieron la importancia de este espacio. En consecuencia, la sesión tuvo un aire mágico y cada bailarina pudo exponer sus ideas sin las distracciones de la calle. Para una de las bailarinas era su primera vez, y aun así su desempeño fue impecable. Aunque el verano pasado solo tuvimos una sesión para colaborar, espero que estas imágenes, al menos, hagan honor a su esfuerzo.

Once again we arrived to this school and the fog was in full effect. Even at 11:00 am the sun invisible to us. We did our best in the classroom and walked outside where the students were waiting for the bus to take them home. I listened to my friend's advice from the past and decided use whatever light was available. Rather than making portraits with shadows, I asked the girls to walk up these stairs, turn away from the camera and do as they wish with their hands. The first few were very brave, and once the others saw them walk up the steps the rest wanted to do the same. The school is in the middle of an immense field, and away from the villages. So the headmaster build it like a fortress with barbed wire surrounding the entire school. I'll leave it to each viewer to interpret the image through their experiences. For me this image means so much, and I'm so grateful that this young girl was brave enough to express herself for this frame.

Since 2016 we have collaborated, and this magnificent artist has always embraced the challenges. This year however the challenge was exceptional, as Death Valley was an all day affair. We met outside of LA and made our way to the valley. We had talked about two choices and by happenstance we ended up choosing the more perfect one. For the sake of understanding, it took over 5 hours to arrive and the same to return, to the spot outside of Los Angeles. That meant that it took Cami almost another two hours to return home from that spot. That is my definition of dedication. The dry lake bed was the perfect location for the first outfit and that umbrella, and the sand dunes gave us endless combinations!

Thank you @camimccullough for your talent and creativity, and for a lifelong collaboration!

While portraits of the students make up the majority of my work in Shamli, sometimes we change things up and the girls get more creative. This image was made in front of the school’s mosque as the sun set to the left. The carpet was placed in anticipation of the time when men come to pray. The classes were finished and the girls were getting ready to go home. We’ve been photographing this community since 2013 and hope to expand the number of schools by two this year. All interested in helping are welcome to message me anytime.

Ahora que @statefilmlab procesa los rollos semanalmente, las imágenes se escanean y se editan. Esta serie me recuerda una mañana maravillosa en un lugar conocido: la Plaza de Armas. Estaba a poca distancia a pie de mi cuarto, tal como amablemente me sugirieron las familias. Aunque para la mayoría llegar allí resultaba sumamente difícil dadas las condiciones extremas que atraviesa la isla, las tres familias llegaron puntuales y listas para la sesión. Dos de ellas eran hermanas, pero las cuatro compartieron el tiempo frente al objetivo sin rivalidad alguna. Comenzamos en la plaza, junto a los árboles, y luego nos trasladamos a las calles. En una de las esquinas siempre hay gatos, ya que se reúnen allí a media mañana para que una señora mayor los alimente. La otra calle goza de una luz increíble que llega desde la bahía, incidiendo en un ángulo que contrastaba con la posición de la cámara, la cual permanecía oculta en la sombra proyectada por los edificios de enfrente. Ya había fotografiado a dos de estas jóvenes bailarinas desde 2023; una de las hermanas participó en el proyecto el año pasado y trajo a la otra para la sesión del verano pasado. Es un verdadero honor para mí tener la oportunidad de fotografiarlas.

This young boy stands in front of the mosque attached to his school, in a small village within the district of Shamli. The image is part of my mosque series, one which I hope to expand on my next visit to Uttar Pradesh. It was made early in the afternoon prior to the portraits, as the sun was at a higher point in the sky. Inside the mosque the regular curriculum is also being taught, as well as in the classroom next to the mosque. The headmaster has also built two new classrooms, which are almost ready. This is one of my favorite villages in the region, having a great headmaster and an incredible group of students. All interested in supporting this young boy and his friends with their education, please do reach out and let me know.

In 2007 I was fortunate enough to visit rural Kenya and a dozen or so schools. The desire of the children to learn was inspirational, in light of their difficult circumstances. The lives of children in rural Kenya are hard enough, and for these children even more so. In front of the camera however, they were themselves without reservation.

This frame was exposed onto Fuji's brilliant Neopan Acros 100 using natural light. Most of my work is on film, and the countries are revisited year after year in order to continue the documentation of the same families, of the same communities.

While making the portraits in the schools is more than fulfilling for me, making images of their families in the sugar cane fields gives me a better perspective. This is hard work, and in January during our visit even harder in the cold and foggy mornings. The young boy in the middle spent the morning with his mother as she cleaned the sugar cane being cut down by the man in the background. The men cut the sugar cane down and the women do the processing. Then the men and women work together to load the sugar cane onto the tractor for transportation to the processing plants.

Gracias a todas las familias en Cuba por su paciencia; los rollos de película están siendo procesados cuidadosamente por @statefilm y enviados a mis manos semanalmente. Comenzaremos a publicar las imágenes en orden cronológico, empezando por nuestra primera sesión de este verano. Gracias a la profesora @loa_oficial y a las familias —y especialmente a @soleidy_rivero por la organización en nombre de los padres—, ya contamos con nuestra primera colección de imágenes para compartir. Asimismo, agradecemos al equipo de seguridad del Capitolio por permitirnos realizar esta sesión. Lo más impresionante fue que todas las familias llegaron puntuales a una hora tan temprana de la mañana, a pesar de la situación tan difícil que atravesaban todos en la isla. Contamos con la participación de más de una docena de familias en esta sesión. Aunque fue una jornada intensa, las bailarinas dieron lo mejor de sí durante el tiempo que estuvieron frente a la cámara. Por supuesto, se editará más material de ese día para compartirlo con las familias.
