Cat and Mouse
Dir. Brady Cates

A young woman quickly finds out she will have to fight for her life to survive a killer's sadistic game.

This indie horror short proves there's so much fun to be had in a genre renowned for violence and trauma. Cat and mouse follows Michelle who's evading a sadistic killer in her workplace, but she soon learns the best way to beat them is to join them.

To set a slasher in a bowling alley instantly sets a unique tone; we have a setting synonymous with fun filled with peril. There's the added stress of knowing a killer lurks outside and can attack from any entrance and lots of fun scenarios in which traps could be laid out.

Director Brady Cates plays in this wheelhouse so effortlessly, balancing the beloved tropes we hold so dear in the genre with a fun twist in the tale that provides an ending that could easily develop into a larger feature. The casting is fantastic with Halima Kamara playing that final girl role to perfection.

I really enjoyed the design of the killer's mask and there was a standout scene which showed some great special makeup effects and promise for future projects to showcase these talents.

Cat and Mouse is currently on the film festival circuit, having been seleccted for Portland Horror Film Festival and no doubt will be a hit in the short blocks for many a festival to come. Be sure to keep your eyes open for Brady Cates, this filmmaker may be dropping some serious indie genre contenders in the future.
