Released through Hallow Ground, it blurs the lines between different genres and modes of expressions, improvisation and composition and showcases the unique playing style the composer has developed. Sand blends her voice with the bowed harmonics and subharmonics of her double bass. At once conceptually rigorous and musically open-ended, Sand’s wordless meditations on death and what comes after are both visceral and explorative. On Β»Baby Ghost,Β« Sand utilises acoustic sound and the spontaneous precision of her improvisational practice for pieces that deal with the subject of dying. They move from more polyphonic improvisations toward abstraction, touching upon harsh noise and minimalistic bow-chants before returning briefly to a melodic soliloquy, and finally landing on an extended subharmonic drone. This progression reflects the journey of the spirit after death; the experience of visions, memories, ecstasies and terrors before the dissolution of the self. Lucy Railton, Weston Olencki: Pressure Chords (LP) Out now on Hallow Ground! ~ The praise from Boomkat: Β»McCowen’s uncommon extended technique exercises take center stage; after years of practice, he’s able to make the contrabass clarinet, usually a monophonic instrument, belt out multiple pitches at the same time. So extending his tones over two long sides, he leans into the alluring peculiarity of xenharmonic tuning by exploring intervals that are just as rare as the technique itself. Railton’s a dab hand at this approach by now and adds restrained (but as always, very impressive) accents, allowing her cello to almost vanish into the woodwind. JéroΜ‚me Bouve & Delphine Dora 𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒅’𝒂𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 LP Β»vents d’aetherΒ« is the first collaborative album by sound artist JéroΜ‚me Bouve and composer-performer Delphine Dora for Hallow Ground. The six pieces are based on live improvisations on organ and harmonium. They were recorded in different churches on the Cotentin peninsula in France’s Normandy region and later enriched with additional field recordings by SA~RA. This adds an extra layer to compositions which were created both in and out of the moment and which quite literally resonate with the histories of the instruments and the buildings that were so integral to their emergence. Art Edition with Handcrafted Covers 200 copies Mastering and cut by Andreas Lupo Lubich hallowground.bandcamp.com The one thing that you cannot expect from an album called Β»COVERSΒ« by electronic music polymath Ivan Pavlov a.k.a. CoH and the mysterious Wladimir Schall is a simple covers album, though both Pavlov and Schall have paid tribute to their favourites before. The former has recorded an album dedicated to the late John Everall, released in 2017 through Hallow Ground as Β»CoH Plays Everall,Β« and the latter has put out an endlessly looping cassette in 2020 with his take on Satie’s Β»Vexations.Β« Much like on these records, the two multi-media artists are not content with the mere reinterpretation of their source material, but strive to reimagine it.
