Circadian rhythms are not affected by red light, making it one of the best lights to use at night. Research has shown that red light exposure can improve sleep and increase melatonin - blue light has the opposite effect. Did you know there is a way to remove all blue light completely from your phone’s screen? by @halstewartdds

Snacks can absolutely play a role in cavity risk, and it’s not just about how much sugar they contain.

Cavity-causing bacteria also feed on fermentable carbohydrates, like the refined starches in crackers, pretzels and chips. And because those foods can get sticky and hang around in the grooves of teeth, that can mean a longer acid exposure.

So when I’m choosing snacks, especially for a cavity-prone kid, I try to prioritize foods that are:

 Lower in fermentable carbs
Less sticky on the teeth
Higher in protein/fat
Good sources of calcium + phosphorus
Whole foods that encourage chewing + saliva production

But this DOESN’T mean your kids can never eat crackers, granola bars, dried fruit or sweets.

Instead, when you do offer these foods try to serve them in one sitting rather than letting them graze for hours, pair them with a meal/protein/cheese, and/or have them drink/swish with water afterward.

When it comes to cavities, frequency + duration of exposure matters most. by @halstewartdds

Fluoride, micro hydroxyapatite, nano hydroxyapatite, xylitol, erythritol, etc. We need to stop arguing over which ingredient is best, and start looking at the deeper issue.

Toothpaste is a TOOL, and it can only do so much.

There are people who use fluoride toothpaste, fluoride rinses, fluoride varnishes, fluoride coated floss, and STILL struggle with cavities. And there are people who use no fluoride whatsoever and never get cavities at all.

Why?

Because cavities are multifactorial, and not about toothpaste.

If someone is getting cavity after cavity after cavity, I can promise you it’s not the toothpaste’s fault.

Saliva quality matters. Mouth breathing matters. Airway health matters. Diet matters. Feeding habits matter. Microbiome balance matters. Sleep matters. Bacterial load matters. Overall systemic health matters.

More important than obsessing over toothpaste ingredient, is addressing WHY someone is cavity-prone in the first place.

What does their nutrition look like?

Are they constantly snacking?

Are they mouth breathing?

Do they snore?

Do they have poor saliva flow?

Do they have airway issues?

Do they have high pathogenic bacterial loads?

And WHY?????

Again, toothpaste is a tool. And sometimes, especially in higher-risk situations, the right tool can provide an important extra layer of protection while you work on addressing those deeper root causes.

No, it doesn’t.

Toothpaste alone doesn’t determine whether someone gets cavities.

There are people who use prescription fluoride toothpaste, fluoride rinses, professional fluoride varnishes, and every dental product available who still develop decay.

On the flip side, Weston A. Price documented traditional populations with little to no access to toothpaste that experienced remarkably low rates of cavities…until their diets and lifestyles became more westernized.

Why?
Because cavities are complex. They aren’t caused by one ingredient or prevented by one product.

The bigger picture matters.

Saliva quality matters. Mouth breathing matters. Airway health matters. Diet matters. Feeding habits matter. The oral microbiome matters. Sleep matters. Bacterial balance matters. Overall health matters.

Toothpaste is only one piece of a much larger puzzle.
Instead of focusing only on what’s in the toothpaste, we should be asking why someone is cavity-prone in the first place.

	•	What does their diet look like?
	•	Are they grazing or snacking all day?
	•	Are they breathing through their mouth?
	•	Do they snore?
	•	Is their saliva flow adequate?
	•	Are there underlying airway concerns?
	•	Do they have an overgrowth of cavity-causing bacteria?
	•	And most importantly...why?

Those are the questions that lead to lasting improvements.

That said, this doesn’t mean toothpaste is unimportant.
Toothpaste is still a valuable tool. And for people at higher risk of cavities, choosing the right toothpaste can provide meaningful extra protection while you’re also working to address the underlying factors contributing to decay. by @halstewartdds

Did you know 80% of adults over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease? Of the hundreds of species of bacteria that live in your mouth, there are 5 you don’t want. These 5 high risk pathogens not only wreak havoc in the mouth, but there is now a clear connection to your body too.

Two decades and dozens of scientific studies link these bacteria to a growing list of systemic diseases in what is called the oral systemic, or mouth body connection. These oral pathogens can contribute to up to 50% of heart attacks, high risk pregnancy, dementia and Alzheimers development, and diabetes. These bacteria can be present long before the visible signs of infection or disease.

Find out if your mouth is putting your body at risk. We are proud to offer saliva testing in office. It is a simple, affordable, and highly accurate saliva test that will tell you the exact levels of each of these bacteria in your mouth. And there are many treatment options available to clear and manage the bacteria if present. by @halstewartdds

One of the easiest things you can do for your teeth? Swish with water after eating carbs or sugar.

When oral bacteria feed on leftover carbs, they produce acids that temporarily lower the pH in the mouth - which can weaken enamel over time. Water helps rinse away food particles, dilute acids, and support a healthier oral environment. by @halstewartdds
