About 6 Months ago I got asked to design the look and feel of a new space for underground electronic music in Sheffield.

As soon as they told me it was going to be called @thesystem.venue I was buzzing cus that's such a fun name to be designing for.

The branding is an on the nose mashup of all systems going - natural, digital, artificial, magical, sound, all pulled together with an array of burnt oranges and deep greys.

We wanted to focus on human connections and the transpersonal sides of the 'system' that is created and added to every day on dancefloors around the world. We are all the same dancer deep down and anyone who's experienced moments of transcendence in the dance knows this.

The personality had to be warm, with little elements of surprise and wonder greeting you as your journey into the night goes on, rewarding curiosity with synchronicity.

Slide 1: Logo

A minimal representation of a chain of bodies joined as one through time and space, also an S.

Slide 2: Behind the booth artwork panels

A projection mapped artwork using analogue prism videos to animate a variety of systemic hand drawn lines in a way which always feels warm and alive and provides a fitting backdrop for all genres without feeling like something that needs watching (down with screens in parties!!!)

Slide 3: Behind the booth artwork panels

A sunset hitting the artwork behind the beautiful custom made both from @designsbybill built by @conorcreates

Slide 4: The Machines

The old brewery the club sits in came free with loads of old boxes, machines, pipes, tubes and cables. We painted them all orange to make it feel as if the whole thing was one big indescribable system which feels important but no one reaaaalay knows how to operate.

Slide 5: Touchpoints

Tiny magical sigils cover all ends of tubing, just incase you happen to have lost it and be staring at the pipes and walls at 3am. What kinda machine even is this?

Slide 6: Listings

A poster template for listings, using photography from @abbsbts s and a dynamic layout which can be used on canva

Slide 7:Pasted Signage

A series of posters depicting a system of connected humans dancing, which upon closer inspection is made o by @hamie_jouse

As much as I love jamming along with my library and a wee controller, it's been an ongoing dream to design a whole show from start to finish, giving a bit more scope to think about narrative and dynamics and how to take an audience on a journey.

With that in mind it's been a super fun journey designing the visuals for both the pyramid beam panel things and the big screens to go with @laserboywonder 's stage and laser designs for the Ministry of Sound Ibiza Anthems tour this year.

A whole load of techniques were used, from stuff I'd filmed using motors, smoke and mirrors to little generative patches in TD and Arena + bits of requested stock - the whole show was created with a DJ hat on, using percussive loops and rhythms of different patterns for visualising respective elements of the music. It was a lot of fun and hard work in equal amounts making sure that each time had its own appropriate visual identity whilst also making the journey as a whole feel seamless.

Thanks to @ellie.sax and @laserboywonder for trusting me with their vision - always a pleasure working with them and their manager Mable. Also big love to @beaglecreate @jadexyeah for keeping stuff calm and helping me out on the technical side and ofc @coalitionpresents for pulling it all together and making it happen.

I've written in more depth about the many many hours of nerdy and arty bits that went into whole project on my website which I'm sure you could find if you really wanna if that's the kinda thing you're into 🌀

New posters for @lukeunabomber and @nonna.fab at @thesystem.venue

After making the branding for the Venue it's been fun to expand that into a series of one off designs for their in-house events. Matching the vibe of the club we have gone with a super textural blending of organic and machine systems at different levels of zoom and resolution, with a warm glow echoing the feel of being inside the physical space. by @hamie_jouse

Here is an album cover that unfortunately never got used for a jazz album that almost nearly existed.

This cover was heavily but loosely inspired by the ridiculously interesting book, The Jazz of Physics:The Secret Link Between Music and the Structure of the Universe by Stephon Alexander  (@stephonjazz ) which I happened to be reading when I got asked to start on the artwork. I loved spending a long time creating this cover and getting lost in all the metaphors and symbolism, if you’re not interested in that kinda stuff then stop reading now cus I’m just gunna waffle about it all for a bit.

--

The main design is split into two sections with the ‘human head’ motif in the middle splitting the inner world from the outer world, but this also forms a Yin Yan separating the opposite sections of the design within the chaos. The line here is deliberately blurry and represents the possible lack of separation between these two worlds when you start poking around in quantum physics. The design is fractal in nature, with the main design appearing multiple times in both the inner and outer sections, each time it appears it is slightly different and at different zoom levels.

The image itself is a dog's dinner of motifs of opposite symbols, intertwined minds, constellations / synchronistic links, vibrations, egregors, jiin, faeries, energy chains and directions of movement and the whole thing is finished off with sprinkles of knockoff re-appropriated masonic symbolism.

All together the design forms an abstract and probably incorrect interpretive map of the links between music and mind, sound vibration and physical matter vibration, time and space etc etc and all that jazz.

----

Thanks for making it down to here in the reading. Lemme know if you need artwork making - unfortunately you can't pay rent with symbolism. AI can't make stuff like this yet, but every time an idiot like me posts it to Instagram then it gets more and more likely that it will be able to, so hire me now while humans are hot.

This year I have had a load of fun working on
the creative direction for the space between.

Thanks to National Lottery Project Grant funding from @aceagrams england, I had some time to wander about
the peak district taking 100’s of textural & instant
nature photos and videos, using a variety of prisms, suncatchers and home made lenses/filters. These were then used in the marketing for the festival.

This is the same process the creative workshops would
have been using during the day, with the results of everyone’s visual experiments being used as live visuals for the evening party on the @apricotballroom system.

I love this process, there’s something about filtering natural fractals through fractal glassware that makes everything feel instantly fun and exciting, especially when the glass catches the sun at just the right angle and you start getting all these little UFO kinda ghosty forest sprite orb looking rainbow bits.

Unfortunately we had to postpone the event due to
extreme weather (trees falling down near the tent is no fun for anyone) but we will be back early next year. This was a hard decision after spending nearly a whole year putting together an experimental high concept event,
but safety must always come first. I have a lot of this material now but I will be re-doing it all to reflect the updated event plans.

If any of these images be speaking to you and you would like to use them to accompany your own creative work, then let me know, I can send you a link with loads more to look through.

Follow @the__s__p__a__c__e__between for updates and thanks for bearing with us while we make a new plan and spend the time needed to make sure it’s as good as it possibly can be and no one is going to be squished by trees. by @hamie_jouse

Introducing Fig!

Prolific radio host, podcaster and devoted digger within the outer edges of both club and world music. Fig’s sets weave a plethora of influences from the likes of dub and trip-hop, just as much as post-punk and grungier tendencies.

Between two residencies with Manchester’s Crop Radio and Bristol’s Psychotherapy Sessions, Grace’s selections sit comfortably in warm, cosy corners, as well as the stranger, whimsical side of things.

Catch Fig at the next Positive Harmony on September 19th!

@graceyfig spinning on the local @crop.radio 🌸

Introducing Hamie Jouse!

Jamie’s influence on the Positive Harmony project is seismic. An ultra-curious artist whose sensory experiments span sound, light, and very much the delightful in-between.

Not only is he returning with his beautiful crystal-light work, Jamie will also close out the party with an extended meander through his tastes. Textural chug, peculiar house jams, you name it. We can’t wait to hear the sonics in his bag.

@hamie_jouse gorgeous Seeds mix 🌱

Introducing Pulses!

Two minds close to the heart of PH. Nikol and Opul, aka Chris and Oliver, are joining forces for a collaborative live set. Connected through their penchant for subtlety, restraint and texture, their music lends itself to the ethereal ends.

Jamming in tandem with their Elektron machines, expect long, airy tracks filled with colour.
