National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and communities, and to recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system.

For settlers and non-Indigenous people, reconciliation asks more of us than wearing orange for one day. It asks us to listen, learn, reflect and act throughout the year.

This September 30, we encourage our community to learn and, where you are able, participate in local events:

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at West Harbour
📍 West Harbour, James Street Plaza
🕖 Sunrise Ceremony: 7 a.m.
🕙 Community Gathering: 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
Join the community for ceremony, teachings, drumming and dancing, poetry and a keynote address.

🎬 Free Indigenous films at The Westdale
📍 The Westdale | 4:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.
Free screenings of AKI, an Anishinaabemowin documentary rooted in Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, and Blood Lines, a story celebrating Métis culture featuring dialogue in Michif.

🎨 Right to Repossess
📍 Gore Park | 2:00 p.m.
Explore this public artwork by the Indigenous-owned and Indigenous-created Bawaadan Collective, examining colonial monuments, land, public space and Canada’s ongoing reckoning with colonialism.

Reconciliation is not the work of one day. Let September 30 be a reminder to keep listening, learning and taking action throughout the year.

Every Child Matters. 🧡

The passion felt throughout last night was unbeatable! The love for derby brought together four amazing teams to give an unforgettable night! ⚡⚡

Thank you @royalcityroller and @grdl_hells.belles for coming down to Hamilton and fighting your hearts out! It made for a great season-ender here at Hamilton; we're excited to see what our league brings next year as it continues to grow. This year was filled with great energy, and for the first time in years we even had a full roster for The Fresh and The Furious!

Thank you so much to our officials, coaches, medics, and fans for coming out to support Hammer City; we are grateful to everyone who was there for us this year! Without all of you, we couldn't have had such a great season and continue to do our best.

Special thank you to the Hamilton Camera Club, and Phoenix for capturing the passion of all the players! It was a blessing to have so many photographers here to capture the last bout of the season.

HCRD is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of General Hellativity (David Kornreich).

Though he hailed from @ithacarollerderby, Dave’s impact reached far beyond any one league. Throughout the roller derby community, he was a mentor, leader, and friend to countless skaters and officials.

His positivity, generosity, and passion for derby left a lasting mark on everyone who had the opportunity to skate alongside him.

The words often seen on his helmet were simple: “Be excellent to each other.”

Let’s carry on that message and extend that excellence to skaters, officials, volunteers, and everyone who makes our sport possible.

Dave will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, league, and the entire derby community.

Be excellent to each other. Rest easy, Dave.

🖤💛
