Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 Hammerspace Artist Cohort!This is a nine-month artist development program for 6-8 parent artists committed to sustaining a meaningful creative practice within the realities of contemporary life. Caregiving, fragmented time, financial pressure, and domestic labor shape artistic practice in ways the broader art world has been slow to acknowledge. The cohort was built around that reality.Through critique, mentorship, professional development, visiting artist conversations, and sustained peer dialogue, cohort members receive the structure, feedback, and community needed to deepen their practice and advance their artistic goals.This year’s program includes: Monthly virtual cohort meetings ✨Individual mentorship✨Accountability partners✨Visiting artists, curators, and arts professionals✨Professional development workshops✨A culminating public exhibition✨Scholarship opportunitiesRigor and accountability matter here. So does sustainability. Our pilot Cohort showed me the power of community. I witnessed it within the Cohort members and through the transformation of my own practice. Thank you for joining us for the opening of “The Shape We Keep” featuring Heather Duffy and Rebecca Senior. It was a wonderful event despite the heat! I know many of you were out of town so stay tuned for more documentation 🖼️Heather Duffy’s Cycle Day series featured figures attempting balance alongside portraits that spotlight the rituals, coded language, toxic positivity, and fragile sense of community that shape contemporary fertility experiences.Rebecca Seniors work explored how we connect to our mother’s lineage. What is passed down, engrained into our biological memory and how do we connect with it? She invited the audience to finger paint directly on the gallery walls to feel the visceral, sensorial mark making of our past. by @hammerspace_gallery

We are excited to bring back our "loose parts play" area for our upcoming exhibition "The Shape We Keep"!July 11th 3pm-6pmDeveloped in the 1970s by architect Simon Nicholson, "Loose Parts Play" is the theory that empowering children to manipulate, design, and reconfigure their environment using open-ended materials, spurs creativity, innovation, and learning.It was a huge hit at our opening in May! Grateful for everyone that was able to attend “Still, I try” last weekend!! The sound of children playing moved through the exhibition all afternoon, becoming part of the work itself. Amid fear, caregiving, isolation, and the relentless pace of the world outside, life continued to unfold in the room, messy, tender, loud, and deeply present.This exhibition featured @samanthafaypaints and @wendyerinwithrow and was the first show in our 2026 Cohort Showcase! Feels like an incredible milestone for these artists and yet bittersweet knowing that our time together is flying by. So thankful for the work and community they’ve created. by @hammerspace_gallery
