Nova Mae Hanslits was born on 10/5 and came home the next day on Adri’s 2nd birthday. Can you imagine a better present? The craziest part is just how big Adri seems now. She walks and talks. She’s got big feelings and opinions. My big baby is turning into a little girl and I feel so blessed to have another tiny baby in our lives! Some serious lessons to learn from my morning on Needle in a Haystack! I fractured my wrist and I’m lucky that’s all it was. I thought I had it, and that’s when I lost my focus. Thanks ego! I had rehearsed the top out on a rope and thought it was dialed, but I wasn’t specific with my foot placement. More pads and a spotter might have helped, but maybe not. I don’t regret giving it “one more burn” even though it was warming up and I already split a tip. Usually I’m so mentally locked in at the top of a boulder, but I got so excited thinking I’d pulled it off in a session. Well the upside is that it’s a really fun problem and I’m psyched to get back on it once I’m recovered. Sunrise session was rewarded with my first v9 flash! Kevin’s Roof @ Cline Falls When you do something fast you wonder if it’s soft, but I’m taking this one. Dad’s time to play is early in the day 🌄 It’s cold quiet and beautiful by the river. The Rack v9(?) at The Depot in Bend, my hardest one yet! 2 brutal moves to earn the name and I barely stuck the crux with 1 finger 🖕 Younger me thought that less responsibility = more free time = climbing harder 🤔 One year of being a dad, doing grad school and continuing to work has proved that logic wrong. Turns out that changing your strategy and focus is as powerful as it sounds. Mostly I’ve just tried to keep climbing fun and enjoy the boards 1-2x a week, but I’ve been surprised at how much I keep learning about lower body and grip techniques. Instead of going to Smith, I’ve been playing on the rocks closest to home and I’m loving it. Well it’s an ugly boulder but it’s one I’ve seen for years and known that I couldn’t do it, so it’s a magical moment when the impossible becomes reality. Gets me fired up to try harder next time I get out! Of course nothing I do will ever be as cool as my daughter hanging onto the granite in Leavenworth 💪👼 Shoutout to @flyingnimbusmusic for the funky tunes!!! Check em out! by @hamsamslits

Stoked to do every move on the project! Heartbroken to realize I don’t have the endurance fitness to put it together 😢 Even clipping got that bad I don’t have the time to make it happen this season and probably not next summer either. It might be a few years before I cycle back into sport-climbing mode... it might be a decade! I poured a lot of work into preparing this line and spent even more energy obsessing about it mentally, imagining what the send would feel like, the name I’d give it, the slick IG post I’d make. So I let it all go for now! And I’m still proud. It’s in the middle of nowhere, but it’d be a unique and epic line at any crag, and I hope it sees some action. And maybe the best part is that I haven’t done it yet! Even more than all the dream projects at Smith, this is motivation that I’m putting in the bank. This is my daughter Adri! She’s 10 days old 🐣 I’m a dad and Vanessa’s a mom! Words can’t describe the feelings but it’s sorta like when the Grinch’s heart grew 3 sizes all at once. What I can say clearly is how impressed I am with Vanessa and all women tackling motherhood in many ways. (Seriously thanks Mom! I had no idea what I put you through.) From the 1st trimester to the 3rd, from induction and labor to delivery, and now into round-the-clock breastfeeding, V continues to sacrifice her body and time to make new life grow. It’s a love like no other and it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen ❤️ by @hamsamslits

ATTN OREGON CLIMBERS!! FRESH CHOSS ALERT!! Can be found on Mountain Project under the “Willamette Valley” area: Wonder Wall and Pascal’s Walk at Humbug Cliff are published! Check it out and talk shit 😜 This has been 5 years in the making since @shingletonjames stumbled upon the crag. That’s right, I don’t do anything fast! To be fair, a whole lot of life has been happening in the meantime. Our current round of work is still not quite finished, and I can’t quantify how much time, effort and obsession @kevinmp_87 and I have poured into this crag the past few summers when we’ve found the free time. It’s enough to stroke the ego and make me feel that the crag is mine. But it’s not “mine” at all. It’s just a cliff on national forest land. A small part of Mother Nature that I have fallen deeply in love with in spite of the frustration to no end that has come with the hopes and dreams I’ve had since James first dragged me up that valley on skis in Spring of 2020. It feels more like she called to me and I responded. I worked hard to tame this wall and now I want to show off her beauty and craftiness to the rest of the world. Far from domesticated, she remains an ancient savage beast that should be approached with respect and caution despite all the bolts she now wears 🙏 I sense that she’s as curious about us as I am about her. Like maybe having humans dance with her from time to time is more interesting than 10,000 years of moss slowly growing since the last ice age.
