A tremendous performance this evening at @croydonfairfield as @benjaminjwoodward conducted Britten’s War Requiem with the Chorus and Orchestra of @regentsopera, the Emerald Choir and the children of Dulwich Hamlet Junior School.

This is a monumental work, and Ben brought enormous clarity, control and emotional depth to a performance of real scale and conviction.
The soloists were outstanding @PhilippaBoyle, @AndrewTortise and @felixkemp, the whole company rose to the occasion magnificently.

A hugely impressive achievement from Ben and everyone involved. One of those performances which reminds you what live music at its best can do. taken in Fairfield Halls by @hancockartists

A remarkable evening in Groningen for the premiere of Philip Glass’s Waiting for the Barbarians with @reisoperanl.
@alice.farnham.14 conducted a thrilling performance of a production of enormous musical and theatrical ambition. Director @guyweizman and choreographer @ronihaver have created something genuinely extraordinary, bringing together opera, dance and theatre with extraordinary intensity.
At its centre, Dan D’Souza was superb as the Magistrate, leading a formidable cast. The traditionally male role of Colonel Joll was strikingly reimagined for a female singer by @charlottehellekant whose vivid stage presence made her a genuinely chilling antagonist. The @noordnederlandsorkest were outstanding, bringing tremendous drive, colour and precision to Glass’s score, with superb work too from @consensusvocalis. The sheer concentration and commitment across the stage and pit were extraordinary.
Sam Brown, Artistic Director, and Rudy van Wijk, Algemeen Directeur, also deserve enormous credit for bringing a project of this scale and ambition to the stage, and for the remarkable company they have assembled around it.
It was particularly special to see Alice on the podium after what has been an eventful few weeks, conducting with all the energy, precision and generosity that make her such an exceptional artist and colleague.
Huge congratulations to Alice, Guy, Roni and everyone at Nederlandse Reisopera. One of those nights in the theatre that stays with you.
The production now continues to Breda, Leeuwarden, Enschede, Utrecht, Zwolle, Maastricht, Apeldoorn and Den Haag, with the final performance at Amare on 31 October.
Please note that the previously announced performance in Emmen on 3 October has been cancelled. taken in SPOT Theater by @hancockartists

A fascinating glimpse inside rehearsals for Philip Glass’s Waiting for the Barbarians at Nederlandse Reisopera, conducted by Alice Farnham and directed by Guy Weizman.
This short film looks at gender and casting through one of the production’s most interesting choices, mezzo-soprano Charlotte Hellekant sings Colonel Joll, a role originally written for a man.
It is a thoughtful insight into the conversations taking place behind a major new production, and into the work Alice, Guy and the company are doing as the piece takes shape.
Waiting for the Barbarians opens in Groningen on 26 September before touring the Netherlands through October.

“There are lots of shitty people everywhere, no matter what their gender is”

Lovely update from soprano Samantha Hargreaves who is currently rehearsing Barrie Koskie’s production of West Side Story at @theaterbasel @reshare_app • @samanthahargreavessoprano I have really enjoyed my first week working at @theaterbasel! My colleagues are lovely and I can already tell will become like family for the next eight months. I’m currently living in the area where Switerland, France, and Germany intersect, so a morning run takes me through three countries! 🤯 taken in Theater Basel by @hancockartists

“This summer I have been conducting a most inspiring ensemble - the National Open Youth Orchestra made up of disabled and non-disabled musicians side by side with BBC NOW. We performed at the Barbican to 1000 school children, in Cardiff and the grand finale at the Bristol Beacon as a BBC Prom - today on Radio 3. What a humbling and joyous experience! Charlotte Harding’s new Young Person’s Guide is superb, and Bea Hubble’s artistic direction inspired. Though an added highlight of course was to work with the legendary Barry Farrimond AKA Ed Grundy and then to drive home listening to him on the Archers.” Alice Farnham https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002zsp5?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile @alice.farnham.14 @nationalopenyouthorchestra @openupmusic @_bbcnow taken in Bristol Beacon by @hancockartists

BEN WOODWARD | BRITTEN & STRAUSS

Two major works for Hancock Artists conductor Ben Woodward this autumn.
On Sunday 4 October, Ben conducts Britten’s War Requiem at Fairfield Concert Hall, Croydon, with Regents Opera, a massed choir drawn from choral societies across the south of England and a large orchestra.

Soloists are Philippa Boyle, soprano, Andrew Tortise, tenor, and Felix Kemp, baritone.
The performance comes in the year marking 50 years since Benjamin Britten’s death.

Then on Sunday 1 November, Ben returns to Strauss, conducting a concert performance of Elektra at Blackheath Halls, presented by Regents Opera in collaboration with New Palace Opera.

The cast includes Catharine Woodward as Elektra, Karin Lovelius as Klytaemnestra, Ella de Jongh as Chrysothemis and Ashley Mercer as Orest.

From the vast architecture and emotional power of Britten’s War Requiem to the extraordinary intensity of Strauss’s Elektra, two formidable works and an exciting autumn ahead for Ben.

Britten: War Requiem
4th October 2026, 7.30pm
Fairfield Concert Hall, Croydon

Strauss: Elektra
1st November 2026, 7.00pm

Alice Farnham continues to lead from the front.
A wonderful review from Seen and Heard International celebrates Alice’s work with the National Open Youth Orchestra and members of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Cardiff.
Reviewer Lucy Jeffery writes:
“By conducting NOYO, Alice Farnham is once again leading the charge for fairer representation within the music industry.”
The review praises Alice’s “innate musicality and nurturing approach”, concluding that the orchestra and audience alike were “in good hands”.
NOYO is the world’s first disabled-led national youth orchestra, proving how technology, accessibility and exceptional musicianship are expanding what an orchestra looks and sounds like.
Congratulations to Alice, every member of NOYO, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, composer Charlotte Harding and the entire creative team on an inspiring performance.
