🧠🌌 What if DMT is a technology for exploring consciousness?

We often think of technology as something external—computers, machines, and artificial intelligence. But what if certain molecules can act as a form of consciousness technology, allowing us to explore entirely different ways of experiencing reality?

When DMT interacts with the brain, it can radically transform our perception of space, time, identity, and reality itself. Within seconds, people can report entering extraordinary environments, encountering seemingly autonomous intelligences, and experiencing worlds that feel more real than everyday life. Yet the fascinating question remains: Are we experiencing realities beyond our ordinary perception, or witnessing the extraordinary world-building capabilities of the human brain?

🎙️ In my conversation with Luke Hancock on The Hancock Hour @hancockhour we explore DMT, consciousness, and what these extraordinary experiences might reveal about the nature of reality.

In my conversation with Luke Hancock on the Hancock Hour podcast, we explored a fascinating recurring theme in D-M-T experiences: what if you reach another dimension… only to discover the most important lesson is about the one you already live in? 🌌🌍

Across countless D-M-T experience reports, people describe entering extraordinary realms and encountering seemingly intelligent beings. Yet one message appears again and again: “Go back.”

Experiencers often describe being told that their journey here isn’t finished—that there is still something to learn, create, experience, or contribute in this life.

What makes this fascinating is that similar themes appear across people from very different cultures and backgrounds. These accounts don’t tell us what is objectively happening, but they raise an intriguing question: why do so many people return with variations of the same message?

At just 23 years old, I became one of the participants who received the highest dose of intravenous Đ-M-T during a clinical research study at Imperial College London.

The study was testing different doses of Đ-M-T — low, medium, and high. We knew we would receive one of the three, but we didn’t know which. Before taking part, we had to accept that we needed to be prepared for whichever dose we were given.

This was my reaction when that reality truly sank in. 😅 I surrendered to the experiment, not knowing what was coming. Only afterwards did I learn that I had received the highest dose used in the study.

At 23, I had absolutely no idea just how far that experience was about to take me. 🚀

🦗 In clinical research with DMT, including studies conducted at Imperial College London, participants have reported encounters with seemingly autonomous entities. Among wider DMT reports, one of the strangest recurring figures is the mantis-like being—often described as highly intelligent and appearing within environments that feel advanced, technological and futuristic.

In my conversation with Dr. David Luke @drdluke from the University of Greenwich @uniofgreenwich who has researched DMT and anomalous experiences for decades, we discussed a fascinating pattern he has encountered in his research: people reporting the impression that these entities are somehow from the future. Dr. Luke has also explored this possibility as one interpretation of these extraordinary encounters.

Why do similar beings and themes keep appearing across different experiences—and why does this strange sense of encountering an intelligence from the future keep returning?

When the Spanish arrived in the Americas, they encountered ancient Indigenous ceremonies involving sacred mushrooms known as Teonanácatl — often translated as “Flesh of the Gods.” For the communities who used them, these ceremonies were deeply connected to spirituality, healing, and encounters with the divine.

⛪ Colonial missionaries condemned these practices as demonic and worked to suppress them. Sacred traditions that had existed for generations were pushed underground — raising a fascinating question about who gets to define which forms of mystical experience are considered sacred, and which are forbidden.

🎙️ In this clip from The Hancock Hour @hancockhour Luke Hancock and Batuhan Bintas explore this fascinating chapter of history and the traditions that survived despite centuries of suppression.

“Perhaps mushrooms are the ones really running the show.” 🍄

It sounds like a wild idea, but the deeper we look into the fungal world, the stranger it becomes. Fungal networks connect forests, recycle entire ecosystems, exchange information underground, and challenge our assumptions about intelligence, communication, and even individuality. Perhaps fungi have been shaping life on Earth in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

I explored this idea—and many more questions about nature, consciousness, and our place within it—with Luke Hancock on The Hancock Hour. @hancockhour @grahamhancockfanpage

DMT is one of the most potent psychedelics known — but perhaps the most scientifically fascinating fact about it is that it is also an endogenous molecule: DMT has been detected in the human body, including human biological fluids. Our biology contains enzymatic pathways capable of synthesising and rapidly metabolising DMT, yet exactly how its production and levels are regulated remains an open scientific question. 🧠🔬

We know a great deal about what externally administered DMT can do to human consciousness, but we still don't fully understand why our own biology produces it. What physiological role does an endogenous DMT play? When is it produced or released? Could it function as a neurotransmitter, neuromodulator, or have entirely different biological roles? These questions remain under active investigation.

This is part of the mystery that @dmt_quest is working to investigate. The nonprofit supports research into endogenous DMT and is helping bring this emerging science to a wider audience through research and documentary filmmaking. The goal is simple: move beyond speculation and investigate one of the strangest molecules in human biology through rigorous science.

As someone who participated in clinical DMT research at Imperial College London, one of the most fascinating things I’ve encountered is how often people describe these experiences as feeling “more real than reality itself.” I experienced this profound sense of reality myself.

From a scientific perspective, this raises a remarkable question: how does the brain decide what is real? If our everyday experience of reality is mediated by neural processes, studying radically altered states may offer valuable clues about how perception, consciousness and our sense of reality are constructed.

For me, this is where the research becomes particularly fascinating—not simply asking what did people experience?, but why did it feel so undeniably real? 🧠

Follow for more explorations into consciousness, neuroscience and the mysteries of the human mind.

Imagine reaching another dimension... only to discover the most important lesson is about the one we live in. 🌌🌍

Across thousands of firsthand D-M-T reports, people describe entering astonishing realms and encountering beings unlike anything they've experienced before. Yet one message appears again and again: "Go back." Many say they're told their purpose in the physical world isn't complete—that they still have something to learn, create, or contribute here.

What's especially intriguing is that these reports come from people of different cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds, many of whom have never met one another. While these accounts don't establish what's objectively happening, the recurring themes have sparked growing interest among researchers studying consciousness. Why do so many people return with such a similar message?

N,N-DMT and 5-MeO-DMT are closely related tryptamine molecules, yet even subtle differences in their chemical structure produce distinct pharmacological and subjective effects. Both primarily interact with serotonin receptors, including 5-HT2A, but differences in receptor binding and downstream signalling are thought to contribute to the markedly different experiences reported in both laboratory and clinical research.

Studies conducted at Imperial College London and other research institutions have used advanced brain imaging and psychometric assessments to investigate how compounds such as N,N-DMT alter brain function and conscious experience. In controlled settings, participants receiving N,N-DMT commonly report complex visual imagery, immersive environments, and encounters with seemingly autonomous entities. In contrast, research on 5-MeO-DMT has generally found comparatively fewer visual effects, with participants more frequently describing profound ego dissolution, non-dual awareness, and a diminished sense of separation between self and environment.

This clip is from my conversation with Luke Hancock on The Hancock Hour, @hancockhour where we explore the neuroscience of these molecules, what current research is revealing, and why understanding their differences matters for the scientific study of consciousness.

Many people who experience mind altering experiences report encountering seemingly intelligent otherworldly entities. Strangely, thousands of people describe meeting the same types of beings: mantis-like figures, machine-elf tricksters, and luminous guides. Why do these encounters appear so consistent across cultures and individuals?

Author Graham Hancock explores this mystery in his book Supernatural by drawing parallels between from shamanic practices of the cave times to ancient Mythologies and modern religions.

In the Hancock Hour podcast, Luke Hancock interviews Batuhan Bintas, a volunteer in the Imperial College London consciousness research program, where he shares his own encounters with these strange intelligences.

Batuhan now hosts Alien Intelligence in Altered States webinar series, an online community that brings together scientists, researchers, and explorers investigating consciousness and alien intelligence encounters.
