RESTORE THE NARRATIVE PROJECT~ I use my art to tell stories that matter and even if they happen around 100 years ago….the subject is still relevant. Maybe now more than ever. Living and working in 2025 in Europe and we are still facing the consequences of colonialism. The women in the photos that i use in my art project, were exploited by european photographers. Taking pictures of them undressed. With the sole purpose of spreading a colonial narrative in europe. And they succeeded at that. It was a whole industry, they had photostudios and countless of postcards were sent…..from Morocco with exploitation. Their obsession with uncovering a veiled womens body shows lack of respect and disgusts me. Thing is, no matter what those women did, they couldn’t win the narrative. Cause either they were regarded as oppressed for dressing modest in public or they were taken as wild, uncivilized and without sexual morality. Their voice was silenced.But not anymore, 100 years later I let my art speak for them.My project is still ungoing….the more i research the more questions come up. The more work i make, the more ideas i get for new concepts. I would love to collaborate with museums and institutions to set up an exhibition and build a program around these subjects. HENNAKUNST | Een hennaversiering, een bruinrode tekening op de handen, heb je vast wel eens gezien. En dat het weer verdwijnt van de huid daar ben je ook vast van op de hoogte. Maar wist je dat er een wereld aan rituelen, tradities en symbolen achter schuil gaat? En dat er diverse technieken zijn om die tekeningen op de huid aan te brengen? JOURNEY~ in a way i can’t believe i made this design already 2 years ago and i still feel like i’m on the stairs….the irony tho I live in a building where i have to take 16 stairs to reach my house but I take the elevator.So maybe next time i will incorporate an elevator in my design hahaha to elevate me to the next level at full speed. On a serious note tho I do feel that i’m close to reach the next stage and behind this portal there’s a key waiting for me. A key that unlocks my full potential. But in order to reach it I strongly feel I have to embrace my strength, my vision, my sovereignty and my authenticity and be unapologetic about it. I have been running my henna art business professionally for 20 years now while being a single mother of a by now adult son with special needs with 0 support of his father nor his family ( mentioning this especcially because there is huge differences between when talked about single momness , I would call situation like mine single strijderness in dutch…..) all the responsibility have been on my shoulders….and please don’t call me strong for that….it’s complete madness when you don’t have another choice……this should be illegal. At the moment I’m tired , my body had enough…..but I realized something really important the thing that I’m most tired about is not our situation bit it’s that I’m playing small to please others……..biggest waste of my energy and my time. Because this playing small leads to not putting your needs first, not articulating them clearly, accepting bs from others, endless listening to things that you already know from experience don’t work, accepting things that don’t work because others need that to come on the same page as you…. Just listen to me carefully and it would have saved lot of time etc etc. So know that I’m changing and not doing it anymore. So if you are the lucky one that meets me and I tell you straightforward how it is…..believe me! No need to question me……have been overthinking this shit for 20 years oke? Question to you …. If you know me do you feel that you met the old me or the new me, this can be very interesting! 🫶🏽� by @hand.of.fatima

My whole career has been a DIY project.I didn’t study art formally, but I did study by looking at art and the artist. Mark Twain said: “Don’t let schooling interfere with your education”, and I made sure it didn’t.I was asked by @stagehuisschilderswijk if I would want to help organise this years DIY Festival. FESTIEVAL~ Als je denkt dat ik het soms verkeerd geschreven heb, dat heb ik niet 😜 de IE in festIEval staat namelijk voor Immaterieel Erfgoed. Dat verwijst o.a. naar tradities die we door geven of culturele gebruiken die we verbinden aan onze identiteit, maar ook ambachten, vieringen en rituelen vallen eronder. Immaterieel erfgoed is dus heel breed en heel divers. Reden voor KIEN @immaterieelerfgoed om er een heel festival aan te wijden.Dit gaat plaatsvinden 20 en 21 juni 2026 in het @openluchtmuseum in Arnhem en Hand of Fatima is er ook bij. Kom langs, ervaar een Henna ritueel. De hennaversiering blijft zo’n 7-10 dagen zitten. Ik praktiseer henna vanuit Marokkaanse traditie, wat betekent dat ik de hennapasta zelf klaarmaak met uitsluitend natuurlijke ingrediënten en als hoofdbestanddeel natuurlijk fijngemalen bladeren van de hennaplant. De henna breng ik altijd freestyle en intuïtief aan. Iedereen wordt dus verrast met een uniek en persoonlijk design. Ik vertel je graag de verhalen die achter deze bijzondere kunstvorm schuilgaan maar heb daar wel meer dan 45 sec voor nodig. 😁#hennakunst #immaterieelerfgoed #festieval by @hand.of.fatima

ABSOLUTELY FIBULOUS~ Together with Sigrid van Roode @bedouinsilver I set up an exhibition called Fibula’s full of Stories. Let me tell you this is a dream come true. We opened for public yesterday and trust me these photos look good but reality is way more beautiful and amazing and captivating. We both shed some teardrops when we entered the space. So far we only saw it with “work lights” still on. But now the lighting is perfect to bring atmosphere while also highlighting the details. You want to see this for yourself and it’s possible. Fibula’s full of Stories is part of Galleria exhibition and tajes place in @rijksmuseumvanoudheden in Leiden.#hennaart #fibula #moroccanheritage #rijksmuseumvanoudheden by @hand.of.fatima

Fibulas or tiseghnas are the characteristic clothing fasteners of Amazigh women. They form her savings' account, show to which region, place or tribe she belongs, and protect her from all sorts of evil influences.⁠⁠@hand.of.fatima and I have been working on a small, but beautiful exhibition of Moroccan fibulas @rijksmuseumvanoudheden, which will be open to visit this Thursday, June 11!⁠⁠Our exhibition on fibulas shows how they have stories to tell....back in the past, and forward into the future. Henna and jewellery go together!Starting the countdown to our exhibition on Roman and Moroccan fibulas in @rijksmuseumvanoudheden with henna! A moment for Fatima and me to meet and start preparing for the opening in earnest.
