"Art of Poverty: Youth," an illuminated, interactive sculpture, is designed by Felicia Brooks to highlight the value of education for impoverished youth. There are 64 individual LED connection points programmed through multiple Micro:bits to allow the viewer to orchestrate the Chibitronics LEDs as it shines light on a story of the value of a poor girl, where education is the source of poverty relief.

Rather than displaying visually how a poor child would look, Brooks reveals the beauty of the inward person. Rich blue pigments, gold accents, and pops of magenta and red are worked throughout the scene. Thoughtful treasures are tucked away under the seat, inviting viewers to take a peek at all she has to give. A glowing circulation of red and green light comes from the living book within her gasp, resting in her lap.

Pictured next in tandem with this STEM+Art innovation work includes a coded tablet with an interactive Makey Makey to present an original "Art of Poverty: Youth" poem and uses AI to detect the viewers facial features. As the viewer holds the ground and completes a circuit by touching a brass coin, different symbols hover over their facial features, reflecting their face inside the artwork. You may view this portion online as well:

"Father and Son" received the BEST IN SHOW award for the 2026 Florida Art Education Association Member Virtual Exhibition! My painting juxtaposes the weight of growing up fatherless with the profound tenderness of my son in his father’s embrace, because of what the Heavenly Father has done. I am incredibly thankful for this sweet honor. God is a good Father. by @handsandeyes

I am honored to share that the Florida Art Education Association (FAEA) has selected me as the recipient of the 2026 Middle School Art Educator of the Year Award.
Receiving this recognition is deeply meaningful to me. I have been privileged to help grow the Visual Arts Magnet Program at Parkway Middle School of the Arts. This achievement would not have been possible without the encouragement, collaboration, and unwavering support of my husband, Lance Brooks, and children, Grayson and Miles, and the outstanding faculty and staff of Parkway, the City of Lauderhill, and Broward County Public Schools. Special thanks to my fearless arts leader and Artist, Donna Haynes, for recommending me. While this award recognizes my dedication as an art educator, it is also a reflection of the hard work, creativity, and commitment of my colleagues and incredibly talented students. I am truly grateful and give all glory to God in the highest who created me for good works in Christ Jesus. by @handsandeyes

"20,000 Watts to You" by Felicia Brooks

I was leaving a 5 Star review for The Daisy Art Center, who so graciously hosted my first Art Talk and Workshop for my Art of Poverty: Youth Sculpture. As I collected photos, this glitch occurred with a video of me presenting in the midst of realizing my sculpture needed more time than I had to fully install.
In the moment, I switched to teacher mode and walked through the activity based on my work for the 25 friends and community members present. But when it was finished, I was sick in bed, plagued with disappointing grief that Jesus would never put on me.
The truth is my Heavenly Father is so friggen proud of me. I completed what He asked of me to the best of, even beyond my ability. 2 Corinthians 8 was on constant replay in my head and heart, bringing the Good Word at every turn of this assignment.

I hope these words give you hope.

P.s. 2 weeks later, 5 hours of installation with Grayson by my side and 71 different connection points properly installed, and it displayed beautifully at the second location 1310 Gallery for the Change Exhibit curated by Niko Yulis. The next stop is Parkway Middle School of the Arts.

"Amazing!"
"Gasp!"
"This is the happiest I've ever seen you play with anything before."

I am so delighted to have my Art of Poverty: Youth sculpture bring viewers joy from hardship.

Here, this couple is seen completing a circuit by holding hands and touching the ground and conductive elements through a Makey Makey connected to a Scratch Project I programmed to place symbols on the viewers' facial features using AI face sensing.

This is currently on view at 1310 Gallery for "Change" an art show curated by @Nikoyulis

Link is my bio for the Scratch Project and Poem. Please note: it is turned to fit the tablet as part of my interactive sculpture. by @handsandeyes

Close Up of "Pumping at the Bonnet House." 2026. Watercolor on Arches Paper. 11" x 14."

I connect the movement in my hair "fly aways" with the orchids' inner pedals in this close up.

Breastfeeding has been one of the most beautiful parts of motherhood. When I returned to work, I was determined to give my son the best nutrition my body had to offer. Pumping my breastmilk became quiet time with God as I read the Bible and pumped in my office. During a professional development course, the staff at the historically beautiful Bonnet House were so gracious to allow me to pump in the bathroom and store my milk in their fridge. This intimate self-portrait is a layered view of the exterior and interior at once, clothing myself in orchids that were blooming in the yellow greenhouse behind my shoulder, as I express milk into a bottle for Miles.

Sitting in the uncomfortable complexities of poverty, "Art of Poverty: Youth," an illuminated interactive sculpture, is an invitation to wrestle with the Master Artist, who is known for making all things work out for good, even poverty.

Her tear is made with Chibitronics launchpad LEDs under arches watercolor paper, connected to a Micro:bit coded through Makecode. (See tags.)

SNEAK PEEK at the end of the reel.
Sometimes, all you need is Art Teacher Pep Talk and chocolate.
For Art of Poverty: Youth, I was inspired for it to taste like chocolate based on one of my most influential times in Cuba. A Russian missionary came with chocolate and split the bar between everyone there. My America mindset was an entire bar to myself, but all I really needed was a morsel. Then I found these chocolates at Marshall's that fit the theme perfectly, down to the stamp of a broken chain that I connect with, breaking the poverty mindset with education.

Genuine Leather hand sewn inside a brass container.

Change exhibition is getting ready drop off starting, and works arriving.

Artists and thoughts...

Norha Tamayo

Change is not always a rupture. Sometimes it begins with the decision to see, feel, or approach something differently.

Felicia Brooks

Her years of teaching have reinforced the idea that creative practice is an act of service—one that encourages reflection, curiosity, and holiness. The work is designed to highlight the value of education for impoverished youth.

Shannon Furst

I press images and textures into clay, allowing some impressions to remain while others are obscured or disappear through the making process. This shifting surface creates an uncertain environment for the jay to inhabit. It reflects both the resilience of the species and the fragility of the place it depends on.

Caitlyn Manthorpe

I draw inspiration from natural textures and insects, focusing on wings. I’m interested in creating surfaces that feel organic, fleshy or bodily, to capture both a sense of unease and the strange intense feeling of existing.
