Gold leaf restoration.
When the client reached out all that was remaining was the NO. and barely at that. Like many gold leaf transoms in NY it was touched up with yellow paint creating painted and mirrored ( verre églomisé, as some call it) sections. The old lettering was traced and new numerals were formed using the proportions of the No. characters. It’s always a puzzle but that’s the part that keeps me going.

The work was reverse glass gilt with 23k leaf, as it was once done. 23k will not fade or tarnish, and is very bright from the sidewalk, even at night, catching light as the finish is mirrored.

Lucy Morgan. On toast. 🙌

This slice was laser engraved during @bradvetter’s letterpress workshop, where students explored typography using wood type, Vandercook presses, and a laser engraver.

Lucy founded Penland in 1929. She believed in “the joy of creative occupation” and that making together could build community.

We like to think she would have smiled at this.

Looking back at two incredible artists teaching traditional sign making techniques at the New York Sign Museum!

In March, @handsigns.info taught Flat Brush Chisel Writing and this past weekend, @gedpalmer taught Rapid Lettering! At Jon’s, students dove deep into the with a lecture about Ancient Egypt and how Chisel originated before moving to paper. At Ged’s, students learned how to paint letters quickly without sacrificing style.

Some gold leaf lettering on a beautiful 16’ wooden sloop. All 23K gold leaf burnished in a convex — dimensional style. Soon to be given many coats of varnish by Pete Schell’s team in New Jersey, before being seaworthy for the summer season.

Thanks for having me Pete, and thanks for your trust Allison. Easily one of the more difficult, but as also more rewarding opportunities I have had in a while.

23K gold leaf “engine turned” lettering for a recently restored 1896 wooden yacht. Soon to get coated with 15 coats of varnish, then ready for salt water.

A real honor to letter this boat in the same style it was done previously by friend and legend- Alan Johnson. Boat restoration by Pete Schell, an incredible craftsman.

A transom from 2025 I never got around to posting. 23.5 K mirror gild “bright gild” with black shadow. No outline, simple, elegant and visible from the street even at nighttime. All 5 boroughs and beyond.
