Why is it that when the US targets Black people for dissenting political views, they often accuse them of acting as agents of Russia? These allegations have a long history in the US and continue to impact Black and African revolutionaries today.

In this video, Omali Yeshitela, Chairperson of the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP) and one of the Uhuru 3, explains how the US looks at Black people as empty-headed people who the Russians, or any white people, can easily influence.

Yeshitela, along with two other defendants, were convicted of conspiring against the US government on behalf of Russian nationals. However, they were acquitted of the primary charge of acting as agents for Russia. They are now appealing the conspiracy charge.

This racist view of Black people was also used by former US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on 13 September 2024 against the online platform African Stream. He accused RT News of secretly running it, saying that “in reality, the only voice it gives is to Kremlin propagandists.” These claims were never substantiated, and yet, African Stream was heavily censored and eventually forced to shut down.

The accusations against the Uhuru 3 are reminiscent of the McCarthy-era ‘red scare’ when Black revolutionaries and communists were hounded in the US.

Claudia Jones and C.L.R. James were deported, while Pan-Africanists such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Paul Robeson were stripped of their U.S. passports. Black freedom fighters, and even writers and artists like Langston Hughes, were often accused of being influenced by the Soviet Union. by @handsoffuhuru

On 29 July 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided seven properties belonging to the revolutionary African Liberation organisation known as the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP). The raids were conducted in both St. Louis, Missouri and St. Petersburg, Florida.

Then, in April of 2023, the leader of the APSP, Chairman Omali Yeshitela, and two members of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement, Penny Hess and Jesse Nevel, were indicted on charges of being “agents of a foreign government,” namely Russia.

The APSP and the Uhuru Solidarity Movement (USM), an organisation under the banner of the APSP, maintain that their only allegiances are to Africa and African people worldwide in their fight for liberation.

Their initial charges put them at risk of 15-year prison sentences. Their trial took place in September 2024, and they were found not guilty of being Russian agents. However, they were still charged with ‘conspiracy’ and sentenced to 3 years’ probation and 300 hours of community service.
