When i came to you
I no longer saw a man
I saw my equal
My other half
Exiled from my body
Walking the world without me
Still answering me in sleep

You were more than flesh
And yet
It was your flesh I remember first
The way your presence
Tilted the room towards heat
The way silence learned your breathing

I kept your secrets inside of me
Warm as stones once held in the mouth
A cabinet of marrow
And hunger
Opened gladly
Used without shame

| loved you without measurement
I love you with my palms I think this is what love is
To offer the body as shelter lo say enter
Without asking how long you will stay

I held you when night dismantled you
Drew you back from fear with nothing but skin and patience
I fought you through adolescent storms
When wanting felt like exposure

I watched you become
Slowly
Painfully
As if desire it self were teaching you how to exist

I waited with my hands
Guiding you into existence I watched you crack open
Like fruit surrendering to ripeness
Like earth splitting for rain

The light that fled from you
Fed me too

We grew into each other
Hips
Breath
Silence

Until love learned the sound of goodbye

I never told you how deep it went for survival
I folded the words away
Hoping time would dull them

But even now
Absence lies beside me
Like a body

And I remember
I don’t think anything has carved into me more
