Comfort Music + is back on Monday, June 15! Join Homeroom Chicago at Comfort Station to watch two new collaborative performances by Lia Kohl (cello) and Xiaolu Wang (film), and Hannah Marcus (dance) and Sofia Carbonara (percussion). June 15, 2026 Doors 7 PM / Show 7:30 PM Comfort Station, 2579 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago Suggested donation at the door About the artists: Lia Kohl is a Chicago-based composer and sound artist. Her wide-ranging practice includes composition, performance, installation, improvisation, and collaboration. A trained cellist, Kohl also incorporates synthesizers, field recordings, toy instruments, and radios into her work. Her work centers curiosity and patience, an exploration of mundane sounds that speak to their specific time and place. Xiaolu Wang ( x140lu ) is a video artist, writer, and performer. Originally from the Ningxia Muslim Autonomous Region in northwestern China, Wang discovered their love for cinema while working at a video rental store in the US to learn English. They consider cinema a practice of togetherness, and the act of translation a reclamation of liminal space. Their work explores language, misunderstandings, transformation, memory, friendship, and poetry through a variety of mediums. Hannah Marcus is a dance artist, arts administrator, and teacher. Her work considers the body as a site of memory, infrastructure, care, and lineage. Marcus’ research finds form in collaborative performance and video work, often exploring the nexus between movement and technology, sound, language, visual design, and site-specificity. Sofia Carbonara is a percussionist and performance-maker based in Melbourne, Australia. Sofia creates performances using the vibraphone, video, audio, and research. I am beyond thrilled to have the amazing Hannah Marcus @hanmar3 perform with us for the first time! Come enjoy some of the best improvising musicians and dancers from Chicago & one from Nashville🙌🏾. This show will be live and also on Elastic’s twitch channel, for those that can’t join us. Freedom From and Freedom To is a cross disciplinary event featuring improvising dancers and musicians. In two weeks we present a new iteration of bones fragile bones fractured at @coprosperitychicago ! Milo and I have been incubating, writing, sifting, tearing apart, and growing the project through Hyde Park Art Center’s Bridge Program over the last couple of months. It’s been exciting to be surrounded by a cohort of 9 other artists whose range of practices and creative inquiry inspire me. What the heck! Particularly stoked to be joined by @plzsendpzza on electronics & sax for this version of the project— they’ve elevated the piece tremendously, and I knew it would be a game changer to bring them on to support Milo & I’s existing sound & movement. Creative Movement with Hannah Marcus: Sat, Apr 19, 2025, 3:00 PM Chicago Grand Gallery Description: In this workshop, Hannah will guide participants through an improvisational movement exploration responding to the artwork on view in Echo Mutation. Participants will embody some of the visual qualities present in the works, as well as uncover a physical language that teeters between intuitive and conscious processing. This workshop is open to all movement-curious people ages 16 and up; please wear shoes that you can comfortably move in on concrete.
