Graduation season has had me incredibly emotional and reflecting a lot lately! SMU has been my home for the last five years, and I’ve lived on campus my entire time. Most students only live on campus for two years, so yeah… leaving has me crying like a baby, even though it’s what I want and know I’m ready for.

I think it’s safe to say that I was pretty mentally unwell for the later half of my teenage years. I struggled deeply with depression, anxiety, and suicidality, and for a long time, I genuinely did not believe I would live to graduate from college, even though I had dreamed about it my whole life. I couldn’t properly imagine adulthood or life after college because, honestly, I wasn’t sure I would make it there.

So the fact that I am graduating from college, still pushing forward, and actually doing pretty well is surreal to me. It genuinely brings me to tears.

I’m already a sentimental person, but this milestone means even more when I think about my family. My mom did a few years of college but never graduated, and my dad always dreamed of having the American college experience but didn’t attend college in the U.S. Because of that, this accomplishment feels bigger than just me.

I will forever be grateful for the sacrifices my parents made to give me access to a private education starting in middle school and to support me all the way through college, including an extra year when I wasn’t able to finish in four years. I cannot even begin to fathom the sacrifices they’ve made, and I’m so grateful they never made me carry the weight of that burden.

I truly believe that education, support, and the freedom to try new things and fail are some of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child. And there’s something really powerful about knowing that my education and degree are something no one can ever take away from me.

I’m incredibly proud of myself, and I’m endlessly grateful for my family, friends, and the kind, caring staff and faculty at Southern Methodist University who truly shaped my experience and helped me get here.

Graduating from college means the world to me. I am so proud to say that I’m an SMU grad.

A server taught me yesterday that the Golden Gate Bridge is International orange. He asked my family and me what color we think the bridge is, and we obviously answered reddish orange. Well, he schooled us, lol. It’s International orange. Now I know! taken in Golden Gate Bridge by @hannah.ashby

I am so sad to share that Hunter was laid to rest today. Hunter joined my family on my 10th birthday in 2012, and he exited our lives today, August 19, 2026, on my mom’s birthday. ❤️ by @hannah.ashby
