Who says you can't play violin music? 🎻✨️ (cries in fast violin runs)

So excited to be playing this piece as a soloist with the @canterburyphilharmonia in November! Thanks to my partner in crime @pianocussion for being the best accompanist ever 💫

New Zealand Day of Percussion! 🇳🇿🥁🪘🪇🎶 Last month, I got to work with the @ucschoolofmusic and the Pandemonium Trust to co-host this very special event!

Percussionists from across Aotearoa, including those from the @aklphil , @nzsymphonyorchestra and the @christchurchsymphonyorchestra all teamed up to present various masterclasses, workshops and concerts! We also had two international guest percussionists @katarzyna_mycka and @fabianzieglerpercussion who performed in the evening concert - they were phenomenal 🙌🔥

Too bad I couldn't get to attend all the exciting events since I was too busy being a staff, performer, booth exhibitor, social media manager and performer 😝😝 Peep the little marimba bar booth I made for this event in Slide 9 - a separate post on that coming soon... 👀

Words cannot describe how surreal it felt being on stage, listening to 14 seconds of total silence after hocketing off-beats for 55 minutes straight...

Performing the New Zealand Premiere of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians with these people will forever be a highlight of my musical career 🥹✨️ It was the piece's 50th anniversary too! Thank you so much to everyone who was involved, and especially to our director and vibraphone player Justin DeHart for making this happen!! 🙏💕

We got a full house at The Piano, with an instant standing ovation!! To those of you who missed out, here is the livestream link if you'd like to watch it back: https://www.youtube.com/live/cdyPWo4DMuU?si=oxKcSQG91o3ngIhO

Missing this performance already 🥹😭

Tell me a more electrifying timpani solo than this 🔥⚡️ Had a lot of fun playing "PLANET DAMNATION" by Kiwi composer John Psathas - it really was as crazy as it looked!!

FULL VIDEO OUT NOW ON YOUTUBE! www.youtube.com/@hannahkagawapercussion ❤️

"I was keen to create something that felt massive, and almost overwhelming... There is nothing in the repertoire for timpani that is as challenging for the performer as this work." - Psathas

That's another year of NYO done! 🎻✨️🌊 Thank you to the NZSO for inviting me back - I got to become the principal timpanist and play on Dresden timps this year 🤯

Honestly this year was so chill, just vibing all week 🕺 Smashed through a couple of epic timp solos moments, and fluked my way through to the final round of the mock audition 🤣

This year's programme was ocean-themed! 🌊
• Jack Bewley - Pray for the wanderer (World Premiere)
• Britten - Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes
• Michael-Thomas Foumai - Kealaikahiki Suite (NZ Premiere)
• Debussy - La Mer

Conductor: @travellingconductor
Performed in Wellington and Auckland

A massive thank you to:
• @lazzatimp for mentoring and coaching all about the timpani!
• The NZSO staff and percussion section for the amazing work they put in to make this possible
• John and Elisa Mendzela for generously sponsoring me this year 💛
• All my friends who I got to play with!! Love you lots 🫶
