For a long time, I thought motherhood had somehow broken my brain. I couldn’t remember things the way I used to. My attention felt different. I was more vigilant, more emotional, more aware of everyone else’s needs than my own. Parts of myself felt sharper; parts felt softer. Parts felt lost entirely.

What I learned while reporting this story is that caregiving may actually change the brain—not just for mothers, but for anyone who spends years caring for another human.

The science is still unfolding, but it gave me language for something I’ve felt deeply: that the endless, repetitive, often invisible work of caring for children leaves a mark.

I’m so proud to share my first story for @natgeo, about the emerging science of how caregiving reshapes the brain.

This was one of those moments where my excitement and my self-doubt showed up at exactly the same time.

I walked away convinced I’d been awkward. Then I watched it and thought…oh. That was actually okay!!

Chicago folks- we are creating another space for women who want to take a pause from the everyday grind to create community and connection. Sometimes I have hard days BUT I also get to travel to @nobuloscabos for work and learn to taste mezcal. So the scale tips towards enormous joy and deliciousness! Still buzzing from last night. ❤️

40 women in a room, drinking wine, eating cheese, talking about big dreams and real life and ideas and all the stuff in between. So many laughs. So many good conversations. The vibes were HIGH.

At one point, one woman said she had literally just met the person next to her and already knew enough about her to answer a question about one of her big dreams. I mean!!! 🥹

People came and they were open and curious and generous with each other.

Speaking of big dreams, I’ve wanted to bring people together like this for a long time. To create rooms that feel warm and fun and alive, where people can talk about what they actually care about and leave feeling a little more connected. And last night I got to look around and think, oh wow. This is happening.

Also: wine + cheese + 40 amazing women is a pretty excellent formula. 😂🍷🧀 Thank you @friendsandneighbors_chi and @beemstercheese!

What happens to decades of cheesemaking knowledge when the cheesemaker is ready to stop?

When @kcadams80 closed Alemar Cheese Company and William Cofield Cheesemakers after 20 years, it wasn’t a simple exit. There were recipes, cultures, a purpose-built creamery in Sebastopol, and an enormous, mostly invisible knowledge base built over thousands of days. “It’s been a grieving process,” he says.

His story surfaces a bigger issue facing American artisan cheese: farmstead production dropped 10% between 2015 and 2021, and raw-milk cheesemakers fell nearly 20% in under four years. Meanwhile, succession is genuinely hard. It takes more than money expertise, milk access, equipment, distribution relationships, and, as Adams puts it, “this obsession with doing it. If you are not obsessed with doing it, you shouldn’t do it.”
