Here’s my start-to-finish process for one of these little 6x6” paintings, including how I install them in their float frames. I sold my “Apricots On Tea Towel” painting at @artistprojectto to a lovely collector, Zoe, and then she asked if I could paint a companion piece for it, why yes of course! If I’d had more time to paint before the show, this scene was on my list, I love painting cherries and this red and white fabric is so fun, if it looks familiar it’s because I also used it for my “Limes On Red Stripes” painting. Thanks to my amazing partner, @sheldonmorris who gave me the idea after listening to me lament about having all these pretty palette papers and not wanting to throw them away, a go-to practice of mine for about two years now has been to glue the palette paper on the back of the painting. In my mind, this adds to the lore of the art and shows so much of the journey of the painting process. Even though I’ve been framing these 6x6” paintings, (panels and frames from @dayandnightwoodworking ) I still like to keep to what’s become a more signature look of my work by painting the scene a 1/2” over the edge of the painting and using @frogtape to have a crisp line. I’m installing these little paintings in ash wood float frames, so you can still see a bit of the painted edge. I use a trick I saw years ago on YouTube, and use playing cards in even increments to perfectly centre the painting inside the frame. I used between 18 and 24 cards on either side of the painting, you just want to make sure there’s the same amount of cards on each side so that the painting is centred. Because the cards are so snug, when you flip it over the playing cards stay put, Dairy Queen Blizzard style, and suspend the painting surface from the tabletop and you can use a drill and some screws to secure the painting into the frame. If you’re interested, there’s a few of these little 6x6” paintings still available on my website and I do commissions! Leave a comment if you found this helpful or have any insight to add! Hi! I’m Hannah! 🤎 There’s so many new faces here that I’m reintroducing myself! I’m from Ottawa and live in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 Growing up, I was always creative but what I wanted to be was an author. I’m a voracious reader (mostly audiobooks now-a-days while I paint) and while I dabble in most genres, I always go back to fantasy (leave me some book recommendations!!) Some of my fave books are: - Literally anything by Brandon Sanderson - This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews (newest fave!) - The Devils by Joe Abercrombie - Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy - The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson - Dungeon Crawler Carl Series by Matt Dinniman - The Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs (I’ve loved it since high school haha) - Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir - Red Rising Saga by Pierce Brown - Eragon by Christopher Paoloni (my gateway drug into reading as a teen) And sooo many more haha (add me on Goodreads!) My love for writing had me pursue a journalism degree from Carleton University, which I now use to write social media content 😜🙃 I’m mostly a self-taught artist but did attend an incredible year at the Ottawa School of Art @artottawa from 2020-2021 for their year long portfolio certificate program and it was life-changing. I have an amazing life partner, Sheldon, and an adorably weird Australian Shepherd, Moxie, my soul dog. I co-own @siennatoronto a residential painting company with my partner and run my home studio in every available moment around that. I always take a photo of the sunset. Always.🌞 Aside from painting, I love to spend my time and money on plane tickets, gardening, adventures for my dog, unique dinners, backcountry camping and finding weird home decor on Facebook Marketplace or Etsy lol. I have new painting and print releases a couple of times a year and the first people who hear about them are the lovely souls subscribed to my email list 💌 If you’d like to be in the first-to-know club, head to my website and scroll to the bottom to subscribe to my email list! So, I met this terrific lady named Diane, at Artist Project, and she really wanted to take home my painting Indulgence. However, I’d literally just learned that the painting had been accepted into a huge art competition so the painting was marked as “on hold” and wouldn’t be available until I knew the outcome of the competition months later in September. She was disappointed, but asked if I’d ever explore painting something similar. My answer was yes. But what does that pie painting have to do with lime margaritas? Well, in the process of getting that new pie painting organized, Diane also commissioned a painting for her friend’s birthday. Her friend is a huge fan of lime margaritas, so I made some drinks and set them up on a couple of different fabric backgrounds and sent her a ton of reference photos, she landed on this one! Which by the way, this isn’t my first margarita rodeo 🍸🐎 I think I have a collection of almost 20 cocktail paintings which are now available as prints on my website haha. Anyways, fast forward months later, I didn’t win the art competition, but serendipitously, Diane couldn’t stop thinking about Indulgence and she’d concluded earlier that commissioning something similar just didn’t have that spark for her. So when my painting became available again, it very quickly had a new, beloved home to go to ❤️ Thank you so much Diane, it was such fun painting some more margaritas and finding a terrific home for my pie painting, Indulgence. You can find prints of both paintings on my website, along with a huge new print release of over 30 new fine art paper and stretched canvas prints. www.hannahmichellestudios.com For those who may ask (not sponsored): The panel and frame for this specific painting was made at @dayandnightwoodworking in Toronto AND I also order amazing quality frames and panels from @rusticburlco The paint I use is water mixable oil paints from @winsorandnewton Music: She’s The Moon Musician: Carl Storm by @hannahmichellestudios

So blessed to be one of 100 artists selected for @artcompofficial Canada’s largest art competition! 🇨🇦 This panting, Indulgence, is a special one to me, so it’s extra exciting that it was the one selected out of the couple I submitted. Indulgence marks my transition as an artist from painting with acrylics, to learning oil paint. I started out with this one in acrylic, painting the pie filling, then switched to oil to finish off the fork, pie crust and knife. I couldn’t get my acrylics to render the fork in the right way and so opposed to forcing things, I took a break, taught myself how to paint with water-mixable oil paints and returned a few months later to wrap it up! We often measure the passage of time in big milestones: birthdays, anniversaries, vacations. This has a fast-forward effect on our lives, diminishing our daily experiences to mere blips. Indulgence is a scene where the pause button was hit, mid-way through enjoying a slice of blueberry pie. The colour and curve of light across the filling is meant to entice dessert aficionados but also encourage the measurement of our lives to include the little, vivacious moments over the span of our days. Pause for the slice of pie, the glimmer of sunlight against the floorboards, the sound of wind chimes, the quiet peace of a pet asleep on the couch. Breathe deep and pause. If you enjoy this painting and would like to vote for me in the competition, check out the highlight on my profile for a clickable link to go vote! Print testing is underway!! 😍 Are 6x6” prints and tiled prints something you’d be interested in? I’ll be releasing my new print catalogue on my site ASAP. I’ve been lightly (read: massively) overwhelmed in the back end elements of trying to get everything organized for optimizing all the new prints for my website 😅 but onwards we persist and it’s coming!! 😂 The first people to hear about the release will be my email subscribers. A commission I finished up recently that required a scavenger hunt trip to Bulk Barn to find their sour fruit juice berry candy as they are my client’s wife’s favourite (I can attest they are pretty tasty!) 🩷 When picking a fabric background for them to sit on, my client told me his wife loves red and pink, so we went with one of my absolute favourite fabrics that I’ve used for a couple of paintings now! So fun how this can get reused again and again and feel so unique each time 🥰 by @hannahmichellestudios
