More action shots from the @toast x @vinterior collaboration.

Cover image taken from The Curious Mind event put on by @toast exploring the spirit of curiosity, contemplation and a lifetime of learning.

If you’d like to learn some of these techniques (and more!), I’m running a workshop for London Textile Month with Selvedge. We’ll be exploring decorative hand-embroidery to help you breathe life into your worn clothes.
✨ More spaces available for 26th September – link in bio or story to book. Would love to see you there!

This September as part of London Textile Month, we are celebrating the art of reuse and repair. Earlier this month, TOAST collaborated with @vinterior and textile artist @hannahrefaat to reimagine a mid-century oak armchair, rescued from Vinterior’s catalogue of over 130,000 pre-loved pieces.

Using fabrics from the @toast archive, Hannah employed traditional Japanese techniques of boro patchwork and sashiko stitching, bringing new life to the chair while keeping its history visible. It is a piece that embodies the spirit of Secondhand September – repair as creativity, preservation as design.

Now you can learn directly from Hannah herself. On Friday 19 September, she will be leading Revive and Renew, a full-day workshop at @cockpitstudios Bloomsbury. This practical, hands-on session invites you to explore the joy of mending and discover inventive ways to revive worn textiles. From visible mending and patchwork to thoughtful embroidery, Hannah will guide you through sustainable techniques that extend the life of your garments while celebrating their stories.

All materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own items in need of repair. No prior experience is required – just curiosity and a willingness to experiment. You will leave not only with new skills but also with a renewed appreciation of what repair can mean.

Details:
Revive and Renew with Hannah Refaat
Friday 19 September, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Cockpit Bloomsbury, London

Last remaining tickets for this date are available from selvedge.org > Events > Textile Month. Or tap on our Textile Month link in bio.

LONDON TEXTILE MONTH: SHOUT OUT! One of the events I’m most looking forward to is the London premiere of HANDMADE FUTURE, a film created by @artist.and.nomad, followed by a Q&A with @celiabirchall.studio.

The documentary explores the beauty and importance of traditional crafts, while asking a powerful question: can artisans help save the world? This is a topic I often reflect on within my own practice and when I work with others.

Dually produced in the UK and USA, HANDMADE FUTURE follows artisans across six countries as they preserve cultural heritage, navigate the complex role of middlemen, and work towards more responsible and sustainable trade.
At a time dominated by fast, cheap production, the film offers a quieter alternative, one rooted in craftsmanship, beauty, human connection, and the value of making things by hand.

I’m very much looking forward to seeing this and hearing more from the people behind it.

LONDON TEXTILE MONTH SHOUT-OUT!
Two more events that look particularly exciting to me are:
šŸ¤ŽWoven Structures & Mark-Making Using Paper Thread with @suelawty and @_kendallclarke exploring Japanese techniques of transforming paper into thread.
šŸ¤ŽTalk & Walkthrough: The Story of Tasar with @obeeteecraftstudio an intimate, research-led exploration of wild silk tasar textiles from Eastern India, tracing their material journeys through community, ecology and tradition.

What I love about both is their connection to traditional techniques, materials and ways of making, while exploring how these practices continue to evolve within contemporary textile art and design.

So much of London Textile Month is about slowing down, working with our hands and reconnecting with the sensory experience of making. It’s an opportunity to understand where beautiful things come from, learn from traditional craft practices, and consider how we can bring these techniques into the present. Honouring traditional making, while keeping it contemporary.

LONDON TEXTILE MONTH: SHOUT OUT!
There are so many inspiring makers taking part in LTM 2026. Here’s a little shout-out to three of them: 1-3: @cuttsandsons, 4-7: @cwellesleysmith and 8-10: @grahamhollick. And there are many more to come, which I’ll be sharing with you soon!

Consider this a little teaser of what you can be part of this year. It’s rare to see such a diverse mix of events, workshops, talks and studio tours brought together over one month, and it’s going to be such a fun and memorable experience to be part of.
More to come…!

A little bit more about me and my studio! I’ve had a studio at E14 @cockpitstudios since 2018, where I share a space with the lovely @kimsutherlandstudio while @joannelambstudio is just a few doors away.

For London Textile Month, we’re bringing 3 techniques, 3 makers, all in one space, a chance to come along, get creative and learn something new from each of us.

We’re delighted to be working with @selvedgemagazine for London Textile Month. Come and spend some time making, experimenting and getting hands-on with three different textile techniques. You’ll leave with a whole new set of skills, as well as a few different artworks, whether you choose to combine all three techniques into one piece or keep them as individual works.

šŸŽŸļø Tickets are available via the link in bio or in Stories.

Head to the Selvedge link in bio, or visit selvedge.org → Events → Textile Month to explore what’s on and book your place.

We’d love to see you there! 🧵

We still have a few tickets left for "Material Conversations – Threads, Marks and Memories" with @selvedgemagazine at @cockpitstudios on 5–6 September, and we cannot wait to welcome you in.

Collaborating with @kimsutherlandstudio and @hannahrefaat has been such a joy. We have been experimenting, pressing, printing and building new artworks together, letting nature lead the way. When three makers bring their techniques into one shared space, the results are layered, surprising and full of energy — and that is exactly what you will be creating too.

Come join us, play with materials, follow the marks, explore colour and texture, and make your own beautiful pieces.

The two day schedule is now live through the booking link.

@kimsutherlandstudio, @joannelambstudioand I have started experimenting and making samples to share with you, so you can see the kind of work we’ll be producing in our workshop for London Textile Month!
We’ve been planning and working on so many different experiments together, and it’s really exciting to try something new. I’ve neverworked with embossing before, and it’s been a long time since I embroidered on paper.
It’s great to create new artworks that can be easily framed and displayed in the home. For this sample, Kim embossed Joanne’s woven piece to create subtle lines, which I then pronounced the lines with embroidery.
